Ecuador went from impressing extremely well these first two matchups to playing insanely conservative as all they need is a draw in the 3rd match and now it's killing them vs Senegal. Woof.
I don't think I've seen "playing for the draw" actually result in a draw ever
France - Denmark in 2018 was an impressive example. I'm never getting those 90 minutes back.
The only 0-0 that WC
Oh wow. I thought people were exaggerating about all the 0-0s we've seen this WC but that does put things into perspective
What a game it was!
The worst game I’ve ever seen.
I’ll remember it forever
Didn't a draw get them both through? That tends to always happen in final games when a draw will get both teams through.
This is a different scenario
France had already clinched, just needed a draw or win for better seeding. (Though that seeding got them Argentina in the RO16.) So extra inventive for neither to try hard.
streets wont forget nigeria iran 2014
Goochannejad had 3 attempts that game, the header should've went in
Happens plenty, we selectively remember the matches where it blows up in their faces.
Yes 0-0 is often boring, thus easily forgettable
We did it with Mexico tbh
But we will play for a draw tomorrow in a decisive game and get crushed lol
There's no guarantee, pal. Remember that your team is going to play against Argentina, and we're equally driven to epic glory as to catastrophic failures.
Source: am Argentine.
Nahh, Lewa got the monkey off his back and scored a WC goal, he is putting 4 past Argentina
England against the US lmao
I'm so happy I couldn't watch that so my statement still stands lol
Such an anticlimactic Friday night. So annoying.
You can't expect anything else with Gareth. We need to not lose by 4 goals or more tonight, hopefully that's enough for him to just send out a team to try to win. But, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he just sent them out to avoid losing, even though we should win by a big margin if we actually try to play.
Hope that trend continues this afternoon lol
Let me introduce you to the game between Sweden and Denmark in Euros 2004 were a draw, 2-2, 3-3, ... X-X, would secure them first and second place in the group and send Italy home.
I was 2 years old in 2004 so I can't be blamed for not remembering that one
actually it happens pretty often
Netherlands vs Ecuador lol
Russia vs Spain
England against the US and Scotland
I've seen it work multiple times, albeit mostly in Lower League Club Football. Big Bad Steve Evans is the master
May i present to you this MLS playoff game in which we (RSL) won the match without a single shot in 120 minutes. And I don't just mean no shots on goal. No shots, whatsoever.
It’s…definitely a strange choice to do this…
Hopefully in the second half they can step it up again…
I don’t think they’re playing for a draw, they’ve said they want ti go and win and in theory this is an attacking and dynamic line up, reslly think the nerves are getting to them, they need to settle down, be more precise in passing.
Just CONMEBOL things
No they're not
He is literally playing
How are they missing him?
He's just all the way up the pitch and they miss him.
Ghosting like Benzema
Maybe he meant Antonio Valencia?
Valencia is there, problem is that they just went out there hoping for a tie
He’s playing isn’t he?
They’re not. He is playing. What are you talking about?
No they aren’t
They are at the gates of direct eliminations games, the pressure is eating them a good slap in the face should bring them back at level they show against Netherlands is Alfarez job to do that.
He’s dogshit at penalties im amazed they let him take it
I was surprised too but with Mane out they don’t have a ton of options
I'd honestly have the goalie on pens over him.
He's a wonderful player on his day, but the worst pen taker I think I have ever seen.
Loses his bottle even in champion games. Amazed he kept his composure here.
Pressure makes diamonds I guess.
Seemingly so. The man who has fluffed more penalties for us goes and does this on the World's biggest stage. Fair fucks to him, can't knock that.
Even with Mane in they don't have a ton of options
Hehe, year ago when Mane missed a pen bunch of senegalese argued that it should've been sarr who took it
Well, he earned it
Thanksfully, their goalkeeper didn't even do anything
He scored the one to win the cup vs Paris, it's all that matters to me
Senegal have been great this half
Playing for a draw never goes well
They key is matching the tempo and tenacity of the opposition. When going for the draw it's easy to end up playing lackadaisical football, which is what we're seeing from Ecuador.
Should be an entertaining second half though! Ecuador will need to open up.
The key is to play your normal football and go for a goal or two. You just can't go for a 0-0 against an even opponent they'll always find a way to score.
Yeah, this really is it. You have to play the way you normally do whilst being more solid. You only need to go back to England Vs USA to see how bad England looked because the players were just told to go out and not lose instead of playing to their strengths with an emphasis on remaining defensively solid.
Problem is if you want to match tempo and tenacity playing to destroy/nullify as a defender against top quality teams technically/physically, you have to exert almost double of the effort to contain and chase ball carriers/possible threats. And after 3/4 of the match your team will be completely exhausted. That’s what happened to Mexico vs Argentina from 65 minute onward.
I think for everything there’s a balance and you have to find ways to keep the ball calmly and intelligently so you can get some oxygen and then continue fighting in defense. You don’t even have to attack just keep the ball and look for dead balls in your favor. Mexico lacked that. As well as being shit in attack of course....
U.S. are hoping that's true too.
This is exactly why I'm glad the US has to win vs Iran today to advance.
I believe that we can win
Yeah, as strange as it sounds, going into the final game of a group or the second round of a fixture needing a result often gives the team a better position to work from.
They can have a game plan from minute 1 and stick to it. Whereas the team that only need a draw will often go in with one idea and then have to completely change when something happens.
That's going to be an even bigger deal with Iran because their manager has been making very questionable decisions the whole tournament that could be seen to be hamstringing his team and the decisions he'll have to make for tonight will be much harder than any previous ones
It's the mentally which is impossible to overcome. If you go attacking and lose then the blame stays forever
They look insanely good in this game
They were very good against the Dutch too. Just got the wrong side of the breaks.
They have been good in the last 2 games too, if this team had mane i could see them being a dark horse
If they send Ecuador home I’ll be shocked lol
Really? I know they lost Mane but Senegal were favoured to get out of this group before tournament
Yeah I actually thought they’d make quarters at least with Mane
don't think they would beat any good team regarldess
They would have won against the Netherlands with Mane imo, considering that they looked great against them and just lacked finishing. Unless your definition of "good team" is "Brazil and France".
I mean ecuador should have beaten netherlands so idk if they are a good team. But I mean we'll likely play them in quarters and we'll see then
Maybe that means Ecuador are a pretty decent team themselves?
They almost beat netherlands
so did ecuador
Yeah I would have said they were even at least.
I don't think they were. Aren't they ranked lower for instance?
Ranking don't really matter, Belgium are not the second best team in the world for instance.
They had a fairly decent run in the 2013 AFCON, and they did well in friendlies and world cup qualifying matches in that year. And since the FIFA ranking only cares about wins, and not "who you won against", they were ranked 27th at the start of 2014.
Rank rarely matters in the World Cup. They are still African champions
Huh? They are like 19 spots above Ecuador in the FIFA world rankings
yea but that ranking is useless, ecuador was third in south america. Im actually surprised they aren't winning considering they deserved to beat netherlands
>Im actually surprised they aren't winning considering they deserved to beat netherlands
Senegal also deserved a draw, if not a win, against the Netherlands.
Player for player, Senegal are a better team. End of.
FIFA rankings don't mean anything, though. According to the FIFA rankings, Saint Lucia and South Sudan are better than Moldova. (Just to be clear, they're really not.)
These rankings are ridiculous
In the FIFA rankings? That's wrong. Senegal are 18th, while Ecuador are 44th. Ecuador are actually one of the worst teams in the world cup if you only looked at FIFA rankings (I think only Qatar, Ghana, and Saudi Arabia are ranked lower than them).
Why? They have better and more well known players than Ecuador.
Ecuador has been arguably better than Senegal up to this game imo
Yes agree in the previous two games, but Senegal is clearly outplaying Ecuador through this half. Ecuador is going to need to open things up, that could be curious.
They are a team that specialises in boring 0-0, 1-1 draws. Just look at their games leading up to the world cup
Senegal went 1-2-0 in their AFCON group this year and scored only 1 goal in their group matches (and it was a penalty), and their coach Aliou Cisse often gets criticised because he plays "boring, defensive football", so what you said kinda applies to Senegal as well.
Yeah, but they've shown the ability this game to take initiative. It's up to Ecuador to prove they too can go forward and play attacking football
I think it's mainly because Senegal *need* a win, so they're pushing for one by playing offensively, while Ecuador are fine with a draw.
But yeah, Ecuador need to understand that playing for a draw almost never works, and they should attack more.
Maybe, but tbh Senegal have looked great in their other 2 games as well. They were just very unlucky to lose against the Netherlands imo.
It's true tho. Senegal were awful vs the Dutch while Ecuador should have beat them
They weren’t, Holland are just better
“If he was any more laid back he’d be horizontal”
Hincapie out here playing rugby
Used to do cycling before
Tour de Qatar this month.
Absolutely ridiculous challenge haha
And he argued it. Lol.
Yeah, pointing at his shoulder. No idea what point he was trying to make haha
Torres is a buffoon for letting Sarr get possession in the box like that. If I was Alfaro, I would kneecap him at half time.
Can’t do that in rugby either lmao
Incredibly blatant, can't argue that.
Such a dumb penalty to concede, pen all day.
So dumb from the defender. And right before half time
That’s the result of playing hectic, bunch of tackles and balls flying everywhere then suddenly you barrel into a striker in the box and now you conceded a penalty.
Very stupid tackle.
Clear pen. Awful mistake for Ecuador, but really well taken by Sarr. All that pressure, yet great composure.
Why can he do that for Senegal but every penalty he's taken for us has been fucking dreadful?
Senegal, Watford in that order.
My dude casually forgetting Rennes as \#1
Because stakes are higher
Every Watford game has massive Stakes... on the kits.
Too much pressure living in the shadow of the greatest penalty taker ever
Imagine claiming no foul on that lol I’d be embarrassed.
Anyone know what his celebration meant?
One of the dumbest penalties I've ever seen. Just a braindead tackle.
Competing with Zimmerman's slide tackle through Bale's legs on matchday 1 for dumbest pen in the tournament.
Zimmerman's was probably worse seeing as all he had to do was stand there.
LETS FUCKING GOOO LIONS
Senegal is playing good as well well deserved
Nice penalty honestly, right in the corner
Goal was coming when Ecuador started time wasting
Need Cifuentes second half
Sarr has been nothing short of amazing this half. Mans a workhorse
sarr has been cooking them all half
Wtf was he thinking
Lmao we are massive
How the hell was this posted before my live TV broadcast
PSGAcademy gets his feed from a quantum wormhole 1 minute into the future.
"Hello, je viens du futur. Arretez d'acheter le Bitcoin." -- PSGAcademy
He's so good I used to think he was a bot lol
your tv is delayed
Good decision, good pen
Oh Piero :(
after having two great games too :(
Hicampe bro you can’t even complain. Great pen
Would’ve put good money on him missing
Easiest pen call the ref will ever have
Bruh they haven’t even finished celebrating and this post is up
The post was up as soon as the ball touched the net for me lmao
That was a really clumsy block off.
Is it me or the Ecuador keeper is really short?
For a keeper I mean
Great penalty - now start taking them like that for us please
It's so annoying to see players complain about the call when it's so blatantly correct.
Totally deserved goal.
CONMEBOL and CONCACAF not looking too good right now bruh...
Watford player scoring at a World Cup let’s go !!!
Dubz is such a shit video host. Please can we get the main posted videos to be from somewhere that isn't laggy and slow
With the way things are going, I don’t see Ecuador challenging Mendy in the 2nd half with their current play.
Teammate is next to him by the time he's shooting lol
So, good for Holland as this stand?
Netherlands were never in any danger of being eliminated anyway.
Hincapie looked nervous all game
Ecuador keep didn't look ready at all for this penalty lol flat footed right up until the kick
Probably good for Ecuador it’s happened early, playing defensively clearly wasn’t working.
Whats the celebration?
Please Senegal don't sleep the 2nd half
Very cooly taken
Damn. A perfect no look shot too.
Is the tv logo blurred due to some copyright issues ?
Ecuador playing like actual shit right now, so frustrating
edit: As soon as ai posted this, Ecuador scored LMAOO
wtf is this ref doing during penalty, trying to distract the player? lmao
