T O P
TheLittleGinge

We really do need an appearance cap for this award. Something more akin to a Rookie.

skylu1991

Or (Young) Newcomer.

wowohwowza

Yeah, I think it should be the same age as it is currently but with a cap on appearances

ro-row

My idea was u21 and under or an u23 who’s made less than 10 top flight appearances before

wowohwowza

Massively agree, Trent and Phil shouldn't be up for this award imo

TheLittleGinge

I think Mount was there too. Ridiculous really.

EezoManiac

Yeah, 30+ appearances 3 seasons on the trot feels like a bit much to give him a good little boy award

Mercerai

I feel like it's taking the spotlight off of promising young players when established players everyone already knows are good get nominated for it. It was similarly insane when Sterling won the PFA YPOTY in 2019 after like 7 seasons of being an established first team player

I_always_rated_them

100% is, you're right. The window for what a young player is and what a senior player is has changed imo, Sterling is the perfect example, winning this award after soo long being a regular in the league is ridiculous. They need to reduce the age or limit the appearances for qualification. Probably shouldn't be eligible if you've already won it.

idosade

Sterling lost a close race for the PFA POTY with Van Dijk so they decided to give him YPOTY as a consolation prize, even though he was an established player for years in the prem

kolo4kolo

Wait… Trent was nominated, and Foden still won?

monsterm1dget

No you are just hallucinating this

adoormarkedpirate

100% agreed. players in their 4th/5th season in the first team squad really shouldn't be up for things like this - should be more for the likes of Guehi, Gallagher, Livramento, etc

-Ceniza

Håland will still be eligible to win this in 2025 (or 2024 depending on whether the age restriction starts on July 1st or the first playday).

NiceDynamite24

cobham mafia

DopeLemon7

Just make it so if you win / nominated for it once you aren’t eligible the next season

TractorSkoot

And then Trent or mount would have won it this season which is no better

DopeLemon7

The age is another thing that is too high. U21 or maybe U23.

HacksawJimDGN

I think at the very least if you've already won the award then uou should be ineligible going forward.

SpaceMajorTom

Heard that Liverpool rb and Arsenal rw were good, maybe I'm wrong.

vikas_g

Funny how he has won it ahead of two players who are nominated for the actual player of the year award.

monsterm1dget

Says a lot about the shit list for player of the year

Imn0ak

I'd say it says more about those 2 themselves. Let's pay credit where it's due.

super-super-fab

Mount and Rice better than Foden this season too

AggressiveChungus

Mount has 7 more G/A than Foden despite playing in a much worse attack

Fatebringer87

Mount invaded Ukraine though.

Coquelins-counselor

Yes but who hasn’t?

No-Shoe5382

Yeah Foden was literally the 5th best player nominated for this award

Furthur_slimeking

Yeah I heard similar rumours. Honestly mate, this should have been Saka's. Trent's had a great season and is amazing, but I think the impact Saka has had on your season is more impressive, and he's younger. He's fucking incredible and deserved it more than anyone.

Levinem717

It’s unreal how much Saka deserves it more than Foden.

telcomet

That West Ham CB is reportedly pretty stellar too. My vote is for Saka, feels like his breakout year as a “in the discussion for world class” player

redmistultra

Is quite funny to me that he’s won back to back young player of the year awards averaging 20 games started, he’s obviously class but still seems like he’s not involved enough for an annual award

wowohwowza

Can't say I disagree, happy to see one of ours get the award but I'd have said Gallagher or Saka personally

bash011

Gallagher hasn't really done too much since Christmas, I wouldn't really have him be the winner Saka deserves it and personally Guehi should've been nominated

wowohwowza

Guehi has been immense, was never gonna win it though it would challenge the pundits on pronunciation too much

meefjones

How do you actually pronounce it? I've heard commentators say something like Ger-hee, is that right?

XpoZeD_GoD

From an interview he did; [ɡeɪi] - "Gay-ee"

GSNadav

When a spurs fan says Saka deserves it, it probably means something

karthik4331

That's what I thought too. But isn't gallagher in the player of the year shortlist? And now I am confused

uchiha_boy009

Pedri is in la liga Squad of the season for only playing 12 games. This is way better.

Skhan93

Has he been injured? The guy was playing 24/7 it felt like leading up to the euros

MarcosSenesi

yeah barca are running him into the ground

zi76

He played too much for Spain and for Barca this year and broke himself.

[deleted]

[удалено]

wowohwowza

Like I mentioned earlier, there's more nuance to the discussion than just stats. Not suggesting Foden deserved it over Mount or vice-versa, but making an argument based on the stats alone ignores too many factors.

Its-been-Elon-Time

Mount🤝Foden Playing without a striker this season.

d0m1n4t0r

Yet nobody would say Mount has been better this season lol.

Moyeslestable

Mount is also 2 years older and I think it's valid for age to be a factor for young player awards

thejewfro69

Not gonna disagree with you, but do wanna note he has the joint most starts amongst our forwards in the league this season at 23, tied with Sterling so Phils as involved as any City forward. If the award had gone another way though I wouldn’t complain

lfcLuke95

5 goal involvements against the top half of the table as things stand. 3G+1A of that came against 10th placed Brighton. Good player, but as many have said on here there are many other young players more deserving.

Jansiz

Saka literally qualified for POTS (Trent too), how did neither of them win that 😂

Spglwldn

Kyle Walker won YPOTY one year when Aguero was in the top 3 of the POTY award and also nominated for YPOTY. Makes no sense.

ZombieHoneyBadger

I was just starting to forget about that, and you have to bring it up again!

EggplantBusiness

Benzema once won Ligue 1 best player award and Ben Arfa won Best young player. Benzema is younger than Ben Arfa....and there was no cap stopping Benz from winning both

BigReeceJames

These things are always stupid though, it's like when a goal wins goal of the season/Puskas and didn't even win goal of the month. It never makes any sense

Furthur_slimeking

Yeah it's a joke. Saka is 100% the rightful winner of this.

IAmSpeed777

I want to see the stats of each nominee especially playing time.... I think other players were able to contribute more to their team and provided quality minutes as well

Wasssan

Saka has more goals, more assists, more chances created and has played a lot more minutes.

IAmSpeed777

He shared minutes with Grealish and Sterling how did he even win.....

wowohwowza

Potentially different people deciding? Does seem very odd

Aaxxo

Saka should easily win it given his squad around him. That's no dig at Arsenal, plenty of quality there, but lots of those have been injured.

RioBeckenbauer

Should have been Saka. Has responded incredibly well to last summer. Still nowhere near as bad as Walker winning it over Aguero in 2012.

JK7698

Surely Trent had a better season than Saka. I know him being nominated was a bit stupid but surely he wins it

tomislavlovric

Honestly both Trent and Saka deserve it over Foden. If either one won I don't think anyone would complain. But Foden winning it? Jesus christ

super-super-fab

Rice and Mount have been better too

tomislavlovric

I'd argue that the biggest handicap Saka's number show is the lack of a clinical striker up front. Laca squandered a ton of solid chances that any decent striker would convert (mostly from Saka, Martinelli and Odegaard). Put a decent striker at the end of those chances and Saka's assists are double figures.

super-super-fab

Given age as well Saka should’ve been a no brainer for this award with a normal criteria of u21s. For personal bias and just because he was nominated despite being 23, Rice was a beast all season for us and feel he should’ve edged it

tomislavlovric

I haven't watched West Ham that much this season but for me it seems that Bowen was more impressive than Rice. Am I wrong here?

super-super-fab

Rice won fan’s player of the season if that means anything? Bowen is great and won player’s player but Rice puts in a MOTM performance almost every time he plays. Not only is he a great defender but most attacks we have start with and go through him. Ranks up there statistically with most midfielders in the league while being younger than many too

Dcapi11

Whenever I watch you play a lot of Rice’s possession seems to be receiving the ball well and then driving laterally to spread the play to the fullbacks. No doubt he drives forward well when there is space too. I think he’s a great player but maybe a bit limited as a progressive passer. Is that fair? Maybe the spreading the play out wide a lot is more a result of the tactics/ set-up?

super-super-fab

Yeah I’d say progressive long passing is a weakness of his game, he can find fullbacks in space but rarely splits the defensive line with his passing. That said, he leads the league in distance carried with the ball so often drives and makes short passes

GeniuslyMoronic

Saka has an expected assist of 7.5 an 6 actual assists. It would take much more than just better finishing to almost double his assists numbers.

9HOS7

TAA does imo, but yeah I do think he’s too experienced to be shortlisted in the first place.

Furthur_slimeking

Nah, as biased as I am towards TAA I think Saka deserved it. Trent is amazing (best RB in the world) and one of our key players, but Saka has really been Arsenals main man. He leads them and carries the team a lot of the time.

Spud_1997

Saka 11 goals 6 assists and nominated for player of the season Foden 9 goals 5 assists And saka is a year younger How?

Bostima

11 goals, 10 assists for Mount too

Ok-Option1

mount is class but 23 years old. I know he fits the critera atm but its actually insane that a 23 year old can have the chance of winning young player of the season Same with declan rice(23 years old), trent alexander( 23 years old), and ramsdale (who turned 24 last week lmao)

Bostima

Yeah i completely agree - i wasn't suggesting Mount should win it, rather adding to the point that Foden winning it over Saka or Gallagher is ridiculous!

super-super-fab

I don’t disagree but if they’re in the criteria then it shouldn’t play a part. Nobody disagrees that the criteria should be changed, but suggesting Foden is the best in the criteria is madness

Furthur_slimeking

Yeah, I mean 23 is still young, but especially when you've been first choice since you were 18 like Trent it seems kind of silly to qualify for young player awards, which surely should be given to players who are still establishing themselves. Also I think Saka was most deserving.

Dobblehale

Foden also plays for a notably better team that have scored 96 goals compared to Arsenal's 56, as well as having 24 more points

Spud_1997

Exactly, saka has been worth his weight in gold this season, take his g/a away from arsenal and we're finishing 8th again. Take it away from city and they're still in first

HarbyFullyLoaded_12

He’s amazing, genuinely is. To break through into THAT City side at such a young age is something else. Sometimes it feels like only the sky is the limit for his talent. So please don’t take this the wrong way, but how? How has he won this lol? There were far more deserving candidates who have played way way more regular football. Rice, Trent, Saka, Mount? I also don’t think any of those lads who is now 23 should even count for this.

ZaDoruphin

This man’s PR team is ridiculous.

Lmao

Annas_GhostAllAround

Jesus Christ

BigReeceJames

The only correct response to that is taking the person who posted it back to the mental asylum. What are these guys smoking? LOL

Pseudocaesar

Nah surely this is satire. Surely

iiEviNii

Not satire, just Football Twitter.

wowzabob

Hahaha, holy shit. Something in the water in Manchester, they produce the most deluded stuff.

pvp_chad

no way

Slitted

City PR

Outta_hearr

City's PR team has to be the hardest working group of people on Earth

zoomie14

Nah our owners got slaves that work even harder

InTheMiddleGiroud

I've gotten so old, people are not even doing Walcott-jokes in these threads anymore.

DerpJungler

Dele Ali was robbed imo

I_always_rated_them

Bad pick, he's good and super promising but him winning these awards is getting ridiculous. Cheapens other actual deserving winners.

telcomet

What is bewildering for me is Foden seems to play maximum two-thirds of Premier League minutes whereas Rice Saka and Trent all guaranteed starters when fit

Ok_Tell_4286

Saka deserved it tbh

Wasssan

Foden's has become overrated.

ashnair888

Exactly. Trent, Saka, Mason and Declan all had a better season than him

Evolving_Dore

If Deki had been with us all season performing as he has been, he'd be worth a shout too. Or is it just English players?

Nature__Boy

Been overrated for at least a year now

pixelkipper

think he’s underrated at this point because everybody is saying it’s a robbery despite him being genuinely class and turning multiple games for city on their head don’t think he should have won it personally but this isn’t that worthy of vitriol

Bedeeki

If you personally don't think he should have won it but he did, then yes he's been overrated.

pixelkipper

No, because he’s now got a reputation for constantly stealing these awards which has overshadowed how good he actually is.

aacod15

How? He is essentially England’s golden boy right now

washag

He's got a reputation for it because he's won the award two years in a row despite not being the best-performing player nominated. How good he really is has overshadowed the purpose of these awards, which is to honour players who have played the best during the season. Similarly to KdB, who is the most talented player in the league but won this award over players who have had a better season. Or Giggs, who got the POTY as some sort of career achievement award.

spooki_boogey

Clearly, you don't watch him play

Calibansdaydream

Yep, watch city play a lot. He's overrated. Thing is, he's young, English and talented. He's become the golden boy for English media. He's good, but come on...he doesn't deserve this award.

Spglwldn

Change this award so you’re only eligible in the first season you start in more than 50% of games.

redmistultra

If so Foden would be eligible this season and almost would be eligible next season, he had 17 starts last season and 20 this season lmao.

Spglwldn

Fair enough. Wouldn’t have won it last season though! Foden is probably a real outlier with his talent in terms of games started, too. Can’t think of many players with his ability that don’t start every week.

fozzy142

That can be applied to most City players tbf. Bernado, former young POTY Sterling and former POTY Mahrez all go through patches of not starting. Any other team (bar Liverpool) and Foden would start every game.

I_always_rated_them

Maybe, but it's not a who would you rather have in your team theoretical award. It's who had an actual better season award.

AnalystNo834

Over TAA or Saka? Lmao…

super-super-fab

And Rice and Mount

theonewithtoomany

Foden could play 1 min every game and still be nominated and win. Heck he probably could probably take a dump in the middle of the field and the pundits would probably have an orgasm.

Acidlearner_5

So same goes for Pedri winning in la liga with just 12 games played then?

[deleted]

There was probably a problem at the post office or something.

AjenoMerveilles

Saka for me. Pretty much ran into the ground (not a criticism. No other choice, tbh), yet despite being clearly fatigued on many an occasion still produced brilliance with regularity. Anyways, Foden should have been disqualified for the times he went blonde...

Atwalol

Foden 9G 5A?? Mount 11G 10A

OnePieceAce

Can someone tell me if there is a media campaign against Man City? They keep winning media awards but Pep told us everyone hates them

Manc_Twat

This is voted for by the fans.

Holy-Metil

Not clever fans then, obviously.

a_guy_named_gai

Wow, he just keeps getting away with this. Between this and KDB getting the Player of the Season last year, I think the whole voting system is flawed.

super-super-fab

Dias got player of the season last year, KDB won the PFA award (which Foden also won young player for).

Finch2090

Maybe it’s flawed, maybe it’s… bought… 🤨

zeca1486

We all know Cristiano Ronaldo deserved it

wowohwowza

Sewey

turtledove21

Yeah this one is completely undeserved

Lazyan

Was undeserved last season too

turtledove21

His PR is insane

hafrances

Saka deserved more.

SeriousLads

Feels kind of mad that he’s still eligible for this

Godsenttt

[Saka, TAA, Mount] Phil Foden is the PR Player of the Season

Rickrolled87

Saka should've won it, how did Foden win it?

marmot9070

Saka was robbed

Finch2090

I mean Foden is good, and has had a decent season by his own standards Not that I think Trent should even be eligible anymore because he has 200 odd senior appearances But Trent has simply had much better season, but it’s always nice to see who they want to become England’s golden boy

kiikstaa

I love Phil to bits but this ain’t it lmao should’ve been Saka/Rice/Trent

msbr_

He's become overrated now.

HugzZILA

Actually cannot believe Saka didn’t win this…

Ok-Option1

is this fan voted or?

Gina_Rolinu

Maybe others are more deserving but you can’t deny Phil is an absolute joy to watch at times

the_chiladian

Hes a joy to watch until the camera zooms in and I have to see his awful trim and chavvy face

Yasuminomon

Really kills your boner don’t it

spooki_boogey

That's why he's called Stockport Iniesta

Shaggythemoshdog

Man really needs to find a new barber

SimplySkedastic

He'd still get the same done. Lads a chav through and through, if he wasn't a world class footballer, he'd be joy riding in a golf round the local estate after finishing his shift at the local JD Sports.

Bedeeki

So are the players who actually should have won it instead

Kasan_Dihaqa

Still not sure how they managed to overlook the young upcoming player in the league, Jesse Lingard.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nature__Boy

These awards are just laughable. It’s a shame so many people will use them as evidence when overhyping him. Should have been the likes of Saka or Rice, even Mount and Trent were much better than Foden although I think they’re a bit too established now to be up for these awards anyway

ashnair888

I am sorry, he is a good player. But many other players on this list deserved the award than him

pjhaft

good joke this

show_me_da_mane

Wait I thought Liverpool players always win the awards (according to Pep)?

AggressiveChungus

He’s good of course but please tell me why was his season better than Mount’s ???

afcchief

he has 27 apps lol

A___99

.... Why?

joeranahan1

Really?

lndes

Literally robbed every other nominee

MrVegosh

Saka, Trent, and Guehi all deserved it over Foden. Technically Rice aswell but I’m not going to say him because I don’t consider 24 young

thedarkknight787

What a joke

Enartloc

Saka > Foden

sheikh_n_bake

Still needs to play more for me.

ArtoriasOfTheAbyss99

Can't wait for r/soccer to tell us that KDB is overrated when he wins his third POTS in a row.

super-super-fab

KDB didn’t win last year, Dias did. De Bruyne won the PFA award, but suggesting either of them had a better year than Kane is madness. I don’t think people think KDB is overrated (I’m sure some do but they’re muppets) but rather that he can start half the games in a season and be given the award on name alone. Feel the same has happened here with Foden.

Finch2090

Well seen as he hasn’t been the best player in the league this season it would suggest winning the best player award would in fact make him overrated And wasn’t he injured for almost half the season in one of the others he won?

PlantPlucker

KDB won the PFA poty, which means the players themselves voted for him ahead of Kane. Although it might seem crazy to us, in the end they play vs him week in week out. Either they didn't find Kane as good or they don't watch Spurs. Personally I think he should've won instead of Kevin because he was immense last season, but I'm not the one voting am I?

Jazano107

kane should have won last year but kdb has been so good since christmas its crazy, so i can see how he'd win this year

Finch2090

So he should win Player of The Half Season?

NoodleinTexas

Tbf salah hasn’t been amazing since Christmas

Finch2090

Hasn’t been bad though, the same way people are saying KDB is good now, but Salah was unstoppable before Christmas

puckuser

He wasn't the best player in the league in the three seasons yet he'll potentially win 3 on the bounce which will make him overrated, it's that simple

fishcakefrenzy

Who decides the winner of this one?

MasterRJS

Clowns apparently

OkMorning4946

Foden won’t be the complete article until he fills out physically like Messi, Sterling, Cassano (maybe not quite like him). He’s got terrific feet and a lot of fight in him but he’s so lightweight he can’t always protect the ball. Other smaller players like Sterling seem much solid, physically. Foden is not a teenager anymore, he needs to stop playing like a boy amongst men.

Dynetor

Any of Foden, Saka or TAA deserve it - they’ve all been excellent this season. England has some serious young talent on the rise.

CoolstorySteve

lmfao

dfla01

How the fuck has he beaten Trent to this lmfao

iamthedankness

He's very good but also very overrated

BarryZuckerhorn

Absolutely ridiculous

____ZeeZee____

Shouldn't have been even nominated in either years lol. Last season, he got nominated for PL Young POTY for CL performances

bash011

He's a talented player but how. He's been bang average in the premier league this season especially since he's been played as a winger

YoungDumbNFullOfKun

Average is a lie. He wouldn't have got my vote ahead of the others but he's still been quality.

YourLocalJewishKid

You are high if you think he’s been average.

Good_Kev_M-A-N_City

He's been playing as a false 9 all season, a selfless position where its much more difficult to get a goal or assist. Grealish and Sterling were the ones om the wing.

micoud04

Remember when City fans/players/coaches cried about not getting individual awards

HacksawJimDGN

Probably cos aguero was overlooked which is a fair criticism

ProcessJoJo

Well deserved!

Usingabrainunlikeyou

Wtf is this joke man.

IAmSpeed777

SAKA BETTER

MagmaWhales

Defintely the best under 23 player in the league. Probably not the best season amongst under 23 players though
