Pure absurdity! Proves the best players often don't win the awards...
Donnarumma was 7th in Ligue 1 in save percentage at 73.3% Navas was #1 and Benitez #2 at 78.7 and 78.4% respectively.
Donnarumma was 5th in Ligue 1 in goals allowed per game at exactly one per game. Navas was #1 and Benitez #2 at 0.91 and 0.92 respectively.
Donnarumma was 12th in Ligue 1 in clean sheet percentage at 29.4% Jardim was #1 and Dreyer was #2 at 50% and 46.7% respectively.
Fair point. To be honest, some Argentines are mentioned a lot while others go under the radar. I guess it has to do with getting NT caps - talking about GKs people talk much more about Emi Martínez, Romero, Caballero than the likes of Benítez and Rulli
It's kinda weird. He has played for a couple of huge clubs and put in alot of solid and some absolutely world class performances yet he has always flown a bit under peoples radar. He just doesn't really ever get talked about. Don't really know why.
Yes it was. I've seen him stand on his head against other clubs as well, and also in a PSG shirt. Something different about him in the CL, or maybe I've just happened to catch his best matches.
No, for sure, he got that weird CL mojo that was passed to him with the 3 straight champions at Real Madrid
But I meant more like *that one game* was brutal on Bayern fans; the most dominant performance by a single individual and Madrid hadn't survived the absolute storm that went down on them in the second half of that game without him
How is it xenophobia. Real have been proven right with Courtois now that he’s better and much younger and PSG are presumably banking on Donnaruma becoming much better and he’s a lot younger too so we’ll have to wait and see how it turns out.
You know that’s not the only stat that matters yeah?? Courtois has him beaten in a load of other areas statistically just check both of them on fbref and compare if you care about stats.
Some crazy revisionism, Navas is good but he has had plenty of shockers, it is clear Courtois is better and Navas was pretty mediocre for PSG last year so its not like the Donnarumma purchase was unjustified.
What shockers? I can show plenty from Dollarruma this month alone. Or how about how he's the reason why PSG got kicked out of the CL? Navas has been the better keeper this year at PSG
Why do you want to LIE?? Navas was #2 in the world last season in save percentage, being one of three with over 80% along with Courtois and Oblak. He was also #2 in the world in goals allowed at just 0.64 per game, second to Maignam with 0.61. So for you, being #2 in the world is MEDIOCRE??? But I do understand, people have to LIE and BELITTLE to make Navas look bad...
Save percentage and goals per game don't really give you a full picture of a keepers performance. And I obviously don't mean mediocre by general standards, I mean for the level he's at and people he's being compared to.
It's true for every league though. I am still infruitated by the fact that Griezmann won over Suarez in 2015-16 even though he is not even top 5 players in the league.
The advanced stats paint a much different picture, though. Donnarumma finished 3rd in PSxG+/-, which controls for the type of shots they faced by using historical data. He was behind Benitez and Nubel, both of whom were more deserving, but he was well ahead of Navas, who was around the league average.
I'm sure that makes the PSG and Italy players feel so much better as they sit at home watching competitions they should still be playing in if not for an incompetent goalkeeper.
Same as ballon d'or. Still don't understand why the people take it so seriously, especially when the voting has often been very political rather than based on absolute merit.
You know what, for all of his faults and shortcomings the Ballon d'Or rarely falls in hands of someone outside the very top players. You may argue someone else deserved it more - I recall Modric was a quite controversial one, because his bonuses were inflated due to Croatia's World Cup run. But at the end of the day he was, and still is, a very very class player who sits in the same table as the ones who probably deserved it more that year.
Awarding a goalkeeper who missed half of the season, and had a relatively meh clean sheet registry accounting for number of matches, is a whole different level of wrong.
I agree. My point is that the award still went to a big player who made important stuff during the year and not some random guy who started just 20 matches. Even if others deserved it more the BdO never takes it that far. (At least the men's award, I still remember when Megan Rapinoe won it after starting six league games)
I swear to god Benitez must’ve had an orgy with every single husband or wife of the people who give out the GK of the season award in Ligue 1 bc otherwise it’s hard to explain how he’s not won it either this season or that other one he had
You might be joking, but I wouldn't be shocked if Messi gets it for winning the League 1. I mean Lewa only scored 35 goals in 34 Bundesliga games this season vs Messi's 6 in 25. As we all now know, you have to score at least 70+ goals a year if you are striker that is not named Messi or CR7 to win it.
Messi will get nominated in namesake alone but will be nowhere near the podium.
The Balon D’or is always about who has the best media backing that year. It’ll easily be Salah and Benzema as the front runners
If he scores a goal against Real Madrid nobody will remember his poor form.
Especially as Ballon d'Or is now switched to consider seasons instead of calendar years, so you should consider his stupidly good first half of season form as well
This man was once touted as the most promising GK in the world. [What going to PSG does for a player](https://cdn.resfu.com/media/img_news/montaje-donnarumma-besando-billetes--twitter-gazzetadelmilan.jpg?size=1000x&lossy=1)
I am surprised they didn’t choose Ramos as the best defender lol. Ligue 1 administration is killing the competition while trying make up UCL frustration of Qatari president of PSG
I get the feeling the next few years are gonna be donnarumma getting loads of stuff whether it’s fair or not
I feel like they wanna turn him into the messsi/ronaldo of keepers
What's the point of these awards when the result is this type of bullshit
I think the correct answer would be “There is no point.”
He didn't even make 50% of the matches...participation award.
Well if it were for participation, there are at least a dozen keepers who have participated more than Gigio...
Pure absurdity! Proves the best players often don't win the awards... Donnarumma was 7th in Ligue 1 in save percentage at 73.3% Navas was #1 and Benitez #2 at 78.7 and 78.4% respectively. That's crazy
Keylor getting sidelined by a bigger name keeper, what else is new.
Why isn't HE a big name keeper tho?! Justice for Navas! 😭
If Keylor was from europe, he’d probably be recognized as one of the greatest keepers of the decade but he’s instead crazy underrated
And they say there’s no discrimination in football.
Who says that? Whoever says that must be on something
who the fuck says that?
No if he was from a strong team that would be true but if he was albanian or irish it would not really help
Wait for Bazunu or Kelleher before you decide that.
Europe, Argentina or Brazil
No one and their mother talks about Benítez despite being Argentinian though
Fair point. To be honest, some Argentines are mentioned a lot while others go under the radar. I guess it has to do with getting NT caps - talking about GKs people talk much more about Emi Martínez, Romero, Caballero than the likes of Benítez and Rulli
I don’t understand this line of thinking. Many of the biggest players in the world are not from Europe
[удалено]
Because Mendy does lol
Senegal just won AFCON
Probably meaning that it's not a country like France or Spain (any of the "big name" countries in Europe).
this is such bullshit lmao. it's like you just discovered football want to hate on europeans for some reason, and aren't aware south america exists...
It's kinda weird. He has played for a couple of huge clubs and put in alot of solid and some absolutely world class performances yet he has always flown a bit under peoples radar. He just doesn't really ever get talked about. Don't really know why.
I've always been terrified of Navas in the CL.
That '18 game was brutal on Bayern fans
Yes it was. I've seen him stand on his head against other clubs as well, and also in a PSG shirt. Something different about him in the CL, or maybe I've just happened to catch his best matches.
RM do not win that game without Navas. I remember it very well
No, for sure, he got that weird CL mojo that was passed to him with the 3 straight champions at Real Madrid But I meant more like *that one game* was brutal on Bayern fans; the most dominant performance by a single individual and Madrid hadn't survived the absolute storm that went down on them in the second half of that game without him
It is a pretty long name innit
Sorry you have a hard time reading it
I never said that my mum says I'm a good reader I can read lots of words
Xenophobia. Europeans don’t support Central Americans like that
How is it xenophobia. Real have been proven right with Courtois now that he’s better and much younger and PSG are presumably banking on Donnaruma becoming much better and he’s a lot younger too so we’ll have to wait and see how it turns out.
Proven right?? This season, Navas has saved 78.7% of his shots on goal, #3 in the world. Courtois has only saved 76.3% and is #10 in the world.
You know that’s not the only stat that matters yeah?? Courtois has him beaten in a load of other areas statistically just check both of them on fbref and compare if you care about stats.
Some crazy revisionism, Navas is good but he has had plenty of shockers, it is clear Courtois is better and Navas was pretty mediocre for PSG last year so its not like the Donnarumma purchase was unjustified.
now THAT'S revisionism
what exactly did he says thats wrong? to my knowledge it checks out.
Save percentage and goals per game don't really give you a full picture of a keepers performance. And I obviously don't mean mediocre by general standards, I mean for the level he's at and people he's being compared to.
Sorry, but you LIED and now want to try and justify it. What a major FAIL...
How is that a LIE, he almost SINGLE handedly cost PSG the tie AGAINST City just like Dollarumma did this YEAR.
Just can't stop LYING can you? Sad you get off on maligning someone so much with LIES.
The way you talk is kind of embarrassing bro
Or its because Navas is old.
I love Keylor, but i’d still take Courtois over him
Man you came with receipts! Thank you for this!
Yeah, there's no way he deserved that.
It's true for every league though. I am still infruitated by the fact that Griezmann won over Suarez in 2015-16 even though he is not even top 5 players in the league.

I'm sure that makes the PSG and Italy players feel so much better as they sit at home watching competitions they should still be playing in if not for an incompetent goalkeeper.
not even the best goalkeeper in the club, let alone the league. Lafont, Benitez robbed
It’s a popularity contest FML.
Same as ballon d'or. Still don't understand why the people take it so seriously, especially when the voting has often been very political rather than based on absolute merit.
It's crazy how much weight the Ballon D'or has, especially considering the fact that it's not even an official FIFA award.
It's probably just because of how old it is.
Tbh I just think it has a cool name
It's a ball, and it's made of GOLD! It doesn't get more prestigious than that! s/
Wait till you hear about the Diamond Ball
I like your thinking brother let’s give it to Messi
it was for a few years
You know what, for all of his faults and shortcomings the Ballon d'Or rarely falls in hands of someone outside the very top players. You may argue someone else deserved it more - I recall Modric was a quite controversial one, because his bonuses were inflated due to Croatia's World Cup run. Awarding a goalkeeper who missed half of the season, and had a relatively meh clean sheet registry accounting for number of matches, is a whole different level of wrong.
It was controversial because Ronaldo and Messi both had really good season and the award should have gone to either of them.
I agree. My point is that the award still went to a big player who made important stuff during the year and not some random guy who started just 20 matches. Even if others deserved it more the BdO never takes it that far. (At least the men's award, I still remember when Megan Rapinoe won it after starting six league games)
Now I’m mad Messi didn’t win Ligue 1 player of the season just for the banter
Also Nübel
I swear to god Benitez must’ve had an orgy with every single husband or wife of the people who give out the GK of the season award in Ligue 1 bc otherwise it’s hard to explain how he’s not won it either this season or that other one he had
🤣
It's to make the baby stop crying.
He'll never stop crying
Scam
All of these awards mean less and less now
Absolute joke
Bahahahaha
All it's missing is Champions League Goalkeeper of the year award.
Add a ballon d'or for good measure
You might be joking, but I wouldn't be shocked if Messi gets it for winning the League 1. I mean Lewa only scored 35 goals in 34 Bundesliga games this season vs Messi's 6 in 25. As we all now know, you have to score at least 70+ goals a year if you are striker that is not named Messi or CR7 to win it.
Benzema seems pretty ahead this year though, despite not scoring 70 this year.
Messi will get nominated in namesake alone but will be nowhere near the podium. The Balon D’or is always about who has the best media backing that year. It’ll easily be Salah and Benzema as the front runners
Salah will be nowhere near as he has been off-form since AFCON. Mane and Benzema have the narrative though.
If he scores a goal against Real Madrid nobody will remember his poor form. Especially as Ballon d'Or is now switched to consider seasons instead of calendar years, so you should consider his stupidly good first half of season form as well
Regardless of the cl final its gotta be benz. Anybody else would be shambles
Messi had a 65 G+A season in 17/18 and placed 5th ffs. 18 year old Mbappe was ahead of him because of the WC ....
what a shit take
didnt know he played for wigan
At this rate Leonardo would have been announced as the player of the year if Mbappe had not been a PSG player.
lol, bought and paid for to keep him happy.
Corrupt.
How does this bloke keep winning best gk awards when so many have performed better than him in league/tournaments?
Legit the Nantes goalie got robbed
Walter Benitez had the most clean sheets, most goals prevented and had the 2nd highest save percentage.
literally why?? what did he even do??? overrated as hell he isnt even a consistent starter
Why did he win this? Who gets to decide?
Other goalkeepers voted for him
Reminds me of the office episode where everyone votes for Oscar because no one thinks he will ever win and he does.
That's so weird lol
Fake league, fake team, fake everything. How can French people be ok with this is beyond me
We don't
aren't*
Excuse my french
Pardon my French?
Pardon, I'm French?
Both
Nah we’re not ok But we just ignore them really
French are complete moronic idiots. Source - I'm French
The players vote for this, this is the players' union award, blame them.
Kawashima got robbed, 100% clean sheets and wins wtf
Wait wuttt
I'm sorry but this must be a joke
What.
what a joke
What a joke of a league.
ligue 1 is a joke
This doesn't make any sense. At all. Give it back to Alban Lafont.
Wtf
That's laughable
Undeserved, but I guess the man needs something to distract him from the constant Benzema nightmares he must live with.
Seems a tad rigged
Awwww cute, PSG bought him a participation trophy
Poor Benitez
People are saying he won it because it's a popularity contest, but how the hell is Donnarumma winning a popularity contest?
This man was once touted as the most promising GK in the world. [What going to PSG does for a player](https://cdn.resfu.com/media/img_news/montaje-donnarumma-besando-billetes--twitter-gazzetadelmilan.jpg?size=1000x&lossy=1)

It's the players of Ligue 1 who vote but as it's always because of PSG... 🤡
Ahh didn't realize it was a voting thing. makes sense
lol
How has Dollar's play slipped this much? Any PSG supporters understand?
Wut
Absolutely laughable. Benitez had a much, much more impressive season.
Farmers league stuff
Benitez robbed, that's fucking disgraceful.
Mendy robbed
This is a choice, for sure
Joke of a league
What the actual fuck…
Wow, look how much good PSG has done for French football.
Shambles lol
I think it’s just a confidence trick for him, otherwise no way he deserves it.
I am surprised they didn’t choose Ramos as the best defender lol. Ligue 1 administration is killing the competition while trying make up UCL frustration of Qatari president of PSG
What a joke, i would be upset if i got that trophy after playing 17 games hahaa
I get the feeling the next few years are gonna be donnarumma getting loads of stuff whether it’s fair or not I feel like they wanna turn him into the messsi/ronaldo of keepers
Zlatan unapologises for calling France a shit country
