Has to be a record loss for a player who is actually sold rather than leaves on a free surely?

FloReaver

Well seeing as he is the 2nd most expensive player ever... It's not that hard to be

Daramangarasu

3rd, no? First is Neymar and second is Mboopi

FloReaver

Is Mbappé more expensive? Possibly yeah

Daramangarasu

He was 180m iirc, Neymar was 222

FloReaver

Yeah you're right Coutinho was 160M€ wasn't it?

gptz

IIRC, He was 135 + 45 which gets triggered if was sold. Since he is leaving on free, it's just 135 million.

arc1261

He’s not leaving on a free though unless I’m misunderstanding? Villa are paying you 20M for him

LDG92

They're referring to Mbappe, PSG paid Monaco €135m and owed them €45m more if they sold him or extended his contract.

prateek_tandon

So Monaco gets €45m just in case he renews this year?

whatvee

I need this option in FM. Some dude I sold just extended his contract once and then retired at age 31 cause of injury. They owe me.

LDG92

Yeah, I think it might have been 145+35 rather than 135+45 actually though.

arc1261

Ahhh my bad

prss79513

Dude should have left in the winter and helped his old club out

No-Clue1153

A bit weird a clause to have, means PSG *really* had no incentive to get a fee for him. 200m (or 200m - 45m) means far less to PSG than 45m would mean to any other non state-owned french club.

MaTrIx4057

Neymar technically wasn't a transfer, he bought himself out.

DrJackl3

3rd most expensive yet. Let's see what clauses Dortmund put into the Demebele transfer that are yet to be triggered. Given how it's been going I'd wager there's at least another 100m oder 200m tucked abway somewhere.

Deluxe07

Damm

SaBe_18

Nah, Jurgen Damm wasn't that expensive I'm afraid

Lmao1903

I think so. And don’t call me shirley

gnorrn

According to Transfermarkt. Cristiano was bought by Juve for 115m euros and sold to United for 15m, so any transfer fee for Coutinho less than 35m euros would break that record.

m3g6w2

Coutinho’s value is like a cryptocurrency. I might be able to buy him soon.

petethepool

Gerrard is praying they are buying the dip

atropicalpenguin

Get my spicy Coutinho NFTs.

Wargizmo

The first time where the player loses value faster than his NFT collection.

mifaraS21

Both of them are scams

username_takne

Crypto is not a scam it’s just gambling lol

KnowYourLover

Gambling is a scam.

username_takne

Is it though? It’s not a scam if you know the risks involved

Cool_Sandwich1

My man here has drunk the kool-aid

themfeelswhen

Sounds like a realistic transfer fee. If Coutinho accepts around 100k a week contract then this a great deal for Villa.

aarong9224

Gregg Evan’s and other villa journalists have repeatedly stated that future permeant wages were agreed pre loan deal and won’t break the current structure.

RugbyContact

Unfortunately Evans knows about as much as a wet mop. Can’t believe he’ll accept around 100k a week. Even 200k is a push as that’s less than half he was on at Barca

themfeelswhen

Well he will have to get that out of Barca then. His current level as a Footballer doesn't deserve more than 100-120k a week for sure.

RugbyContact

Don’t be silly, he’s still an amazingly talented player

themfeelswhen

Hence 120k. That would make him the highest paid player at villa. It's not peanuts. He is not good enough to play for the big teams who pay the 200k+ wages.

RugbyContact

That wouldn’t make him the highest paid player at Villa. Why have 2 big teams given him more than 200k then?

themfeelswhen

>Why have 2 big teams given him more than 200k then? Do you really believe his current level same as when those two teams gave him that much?

HungryVegetation

He’s just simply not the player he was when said two big teams offered him more than 200k. I’m happy to have him for 15-20m but he’s not really been anything special for us and hasn’t shown the quality of a player that deserves more that 100-150k.

Rickcampbell98

We aren't paying anyone 200k until we become a European team again.

RugbyContact

Just don’t see him accepting any less than 200k

aarong9224

No team on earth would pay him 200k a week at his current ability. It will be around 150k mark I would say.

RugbyContact

Why would he accept 150k at Villa? That’s taking a 300k cut in pay?

Rickcampbell98

Because he wants to play football, the world Cup is coming up and in all likelihood its his last, as s starter anyway.

TheOldGodsShallRise

Maybe because he doesn't want to warm the bench at Barça for another year. He's filthy rich already. If football matters even just a little to him, he'll accept.

RugbyContact

There’s no guarantee he starts for Villa either though. Better to get 450k a week then get 150k

kanavi36

Much easier to play your way to being a nailed on starter at Villa than Barca

reggeabwoy

He was never making that much. I heard he took a pay cut to transfer to Barcelona from Liverpool

RugbyContact

No chance. We’re paying him over 100k and we’re only paying about 25% of his wages. Every report has him on over 400k

dave1992

Why not? Getting less money (while still a lot anyway) is reasonable if you are playing for a more comfortable team.

RugbyContact

But most players don’t think like that. Most players would see out the 400k contract

dave1992

Maybe. We've seen plenty who would. Whether Coutinho is one of them, I don't know.

rasen9an

They can pay him the difference as a signing bonus and tell the other players that they didn't break the wage structure.

RandyLiddell

15 mil is not a bad price for a player of his caliber for a club like Aston Villa.

ro-row

Depends on the wages

aarong9224

Villa have a tight wage structure. He won’t break 150k a week. Personal terms were already agreed pre loan deal.

ManLikeArch

Tight structure that pays 150k whilst being firmly mid table is wild

ke_0z

Iirc, that's around what we paid Grealish when he signed his contract extension before the 2020/21 season.

Rickcampbell98

Premier league money plus absolutely loaded owners who are very ambitious.

aarong9224

Your highest earner being on 150k isn’t outrageous. We had Grealish on that two seasons ago and Danny ings is reportedly on 100/120.

RugbyContact

The aim is that we won’t be mid table for much longer

tsizzler12

Your board has that much faith in Gerrard? Results seem a bit underwhelming since he came in

aarong9224

9th in the table since he has came in.

LordMangudai

That would still be below your owners' expectations, no?

aarong9224

Not for our third season no.

happilyworking

Would be harsh to judge Gerrard based on half a season of results AND only 1 mid-season transfer window.

RugbyContact

Don’t think it really matters who the manager is, the money that will be spent will mean the job will be easy for Gerrard

ThrowerWheyACount

I’m unsure if getting above mid table is as easy done as it is said.. next step above mid table would be conference league..so competing with and/or finishing above one of the top 6, saudi-ran Newcastle, Leicester/Wolves/Palace tier competitors, etc. To me whichever manager does that with Villa would be very special, rather than any old coach.

RugbyContact

Tbh that doesn’t seem a difficult achievement at all. Newcastle are years away from competing for Europe and we finished above all of those clubs last season and we should finish above Leicester this season. 7th would be great but it would hardly be an unbelievable achievement for Gerrard

DannyDyersHomunculus

Long long way from that

spongemongler

True. Must be rough being on such a “tight” wage structure for a mid-table team. 150k a week is basically peanuts. We pay our janitors that.

stevew14

Not bad? That's a steal for a player of his quality. He is going to be 30 by the time the season starts, but he looks fit and well this season. Could get a good 3 years out of him.

Djejoa

How has he been at Aston Villa. Haven’t heard much about him after the first few matches

HungryVegetation

Honestly not particularly good except for a few standout performances, but not bad either. I personally would rather we spend the money elsewhere and develop Buendia who has imo been better than Coutinho for the most part. But 15-20m is reasonable so I don’t really mind.

aarong9224

We won’t get a better 10 for that price.

HungryVegetation

I’d argue we don’t need another 10, I know the owners are not stingy with money but I still feel the transfer fee and wages could be better spend on positions we need more urgently like a DM and/or CB.

aarong9224

If we want to be a top half team we need to have squad depth. What happens next year bundiea gets injured and we fight relegation again ?

AxFairy

That's a good point, no Buendia and no Coutinho would leave us struggling

BusterTheElliott

I would say he's had a couple of iffy performances, but he has been massively let down by our overall finishing, especially in the Spurs match.

Albiceleste_D10S

Had a good first few games. Had 2G, 1A in games vs Southampton and Aston Villa in early March, and has had 0 goals or assists since then. His underlying stats look ok, tho I haven't watched full Aston Villa games recently

AshkenaziTwink

he’s been good but he’s being let down by Danny Ings’ finishing.

Vegan_Puffin

This depending on wages would be great. Not sure we need him though. Gerrard seems to have come to the conclusion we can only play Buendia or Coutinho but not both. Buendia has been better overall, he is our record signing at £38m and we have other pressing priorities in the team than a role we already have covered. I think most Villa fans would agree Buendia has been more important to our performances.

dafinecommedia

Two excellent players in an important position isn’t exactly a setback

HungryVegetation

I may be when the younger and better performing of the two is consistently benched. If that were to continue next season I can’t see why Buendia would want to stay.

itsbraille

I think if the back end of the midfield is settled Gerrard will have freedom to play around more with the attack combination, whether it be a 2–1 with Emi, Phil, Ings/Ollie or a 1-2 with Emi/Phil, Ings, Ollie. It’ll also be nice to have the depth to go hard after domestic cups.

AxFairy

Where does Bailey fit do you think? Or is he on his way out along with El Ghazi / Traore / Trez

Rickcampbell98

To be a European team you need a squad, can't just have 11 players, see how we got fucked by Jack's shins don't want that happening again. Plus I want us to actually do something in the fa cup again, have we even won a round since we last got to the final.

aarong9224

We need more than one player in each position. If we want to be a top half team we need a squad of high level players.

dave1992

But you don't want to only have 1 of them. 15m for a player to be rotated with Buendia sounds good?

TheConundrum98

much better price for Villa, now the important part, the wages

Skadrys

>much better price for Villa Bad for us, reportedly newcastle is willing to pay asked 40m.

justmadman

No, he is a better fit for Villa

PraisePace

No one's denying that, they're just paying less than Newcastle which is obviously what we're more interested in.

justmadman

I have not seen a single credible source Newcastle are even interested in him. You got any? As far as I understand his only destination is Villa or stay at Barcelona if he can’t agree wages.

[deleted]

Tottenham also wanted him.

Omair88

And a Barca fan would care about that vs the fee?

meganev

Utter bullshit. No chance we'd even want him. None of our tier 1s have ever suggested we have any interest in him (in Jan or now) and he doesn't fit the profile of players we're targeting. We're linked with everyone now by lazy sports journos.

WilfriedBonyFanAcc

Newcastle to get Ronaldo in 2024

TLG_BE

Nothing on Newcastles side was reporting it. It was just your journalists trying to drive up the price again

GoatButton

Always rated Villa

theenigmacode

BarcaStreetBets Buy high, sell low.

FloReaver

The Barto special man

TheBlueNomad

They have been holding too many heavy bags.

bodydouble

Need to know what the wages are before I can feel happy about this.

mntgoat

I need to know how much Liverpool will make from this since they make money every time Coutinho takes a breath.

tomatotom999

Had a search, there wasn’t a sell on but there was a 90 million premium if they went back for more players before 2020

itsbraille

What tier is this report from? If the price is that low Villa would be mad not to buy him.

BorkieDorkie811

It would be Michael Edwards' greatest triumph if it came out that there's a sell-on clause to give Liverpool a cut of this deal.

Reimiro

Think we already got a small one when he went to Bayern..seem to remember that.

BigfatDan1

He only went out on loan to Bayern so there wouldn't have been a sell on fee for that

McKFC

Reportedly we got a payment for him winning the CL there, as the transfer didn't specify it had to be at Barca

BigfatDan1

That makes more sense, a performance related clause, amazing!

Yoesito

That was never true, all the journos here denied it. The only sources claiming it were low tier Liverpool press and AS/Marca.

pw5a29

wait....given the deal was with Barca, does that mean Barca has to pay us because Bayern won the CL?

FuckNoNewNormal

Yes

FloReaver

Let's be honest, Barca doesn't have the upper hand and if you had asked Barca fans a year ago, they would have said yes for this price (and even for 0€ in December when the club thought of offering him the "carta de libertad" to walk away for free) Aston Villa gets a good player for a good price, he gets to have a new beginning in PL, and we save on his massive wages. Hoping he'll do well!

Radiksas

ngl wanted more, but need to fkoff with those wages

TheGamezSmith

Glad that we're atleast willing to just cut our losses with our failed transfers/contracts.

Superb-Confidence-44

Only a loss of 140m and 2-8.

dwilliam24

This was where I thought it would end and it seems fair for both sides considering he only has one year left on his contract.

Bundmoranen

At that price it’s a no brainer

clintomcruisewood

I don't think so. He's going to be one of the highest paid players at Villa without exactly setting the world alight on his loan spell. He's going to turn 30 this summer, and he might see this as his last big contract. We have seen multiple examples of how players at this stage of their career suddenly drop in level. And aging Brazilians don't exactly have the best track record either. I fear for Villa that this is the work of a manager who has a special relationship with a player who is going to not deliver what is expected of a player with his experience and wages.

II_MrBlack_II

Last summer the club was begging someone to take him for free to free up his wages There is now way we will be getting the full 40m with his high wages, The sum of 20 million is more than wonderful

bizzyd666

Anyone got the don't give me hope gif?

BigfatDan1

https://imgur.com/gallery/YwtiRIt

RayPissed

How long does he have left on his Barcelona contract anyway?

BigfatDan1

I think it's summer 2023 so 1 year left

RugbyContact

Great news. Gonna be a big summer of signings for us so need to get them in early in order to bed them in

Height_Embarrassed

Great if true. Everyone was hoping to just get rid of his high wages, if Villa offers 15-20 on top, then gift wrap the man and take him

Novel_Specific7769

As a Barca fan, I Always rated Steven as one of the greatest mid fielder of all time in EPL & England. We highly praise him & support him. We hope he'll enjoy successful coaching carrier in Villa. 😍

Snowstandards

I honestly don't want to face Barcelona until the final. So which ever of us wins we can celebrate together. I can imagine the fans pulling out a banner saying "gracias Stevie G" in Catalan and Brummie.

razorxx888

As long as we’re holding hands at the end

irgendwo_anders

wtf is this shit

Disastrous_Tip_3347

attempt at a joke that he is so thankful to have Coutinho out of his club he sings Gerrads praises

anusFati

i know, right - "carrier", it's "career"

ss2195

If the wages are decent enough, it's a pretty decent bit of business for Villa. He can drift in and out of games but keep him motivated and there are very few teams out there who'll be able to keep him quiet.

PhenomenallyAwesome

That’s a great price for us

ConflictMArx

Lol lol lol lol. Good luck Villa, at least he'll be going to a big club. Not a bad deal for you overall.

backtothepavilion

Great signing for Villa

JourneytoAlpha

Good signing, he has been immense for them

Enartloc

Didn't r/soccer tell me he's worth 40 mil and Villa will definitively pay that ?

Cowdude179

That's the Azpi and Alonso money sorted

deadlyghost12

club wont sign them for anything more than 2M combined gerad romero has already reported it

Vegan_Puffin

Would it not be the wages gone that is more important than the fee?

FloReaver

Nah both are as important. But yes, between wages and transfer fee, that's 40M€ in the bank for next year (but under the ratio of La Liga, only a third can be used to register new players, unless we somehow are under our "squad cost limit" by the end of June)

deadlyghost12

Both are important as they will added to money saved

uloveitmate

Sure Lol

adamjld

Good price but still don't think he fits in that team.

PhenomenallyAwesome

Not bad rotation to have him and Buendia is it? Just need Gerrard to realise that Coutinho plays bad sometimes and have him actually rotate

htmwc

Length of contract and wages will be interesting. He’s 30 in the summer. Getting trapped with older players on big contracts can be a killer in non-European clubs. Plus I don’t think he’s even that good

notaselfdrivingcar

Sad af

Magnus250

And how much will Liverpool get?
