NegativeHeli

Would you rather have Roberto Martinez or Gareth Southgate to manage your team? Assuming you have to pick one of them.

LDQQXDJ

Southgate

HodgyBeatsss

In general Martinez seems a better coach, so would prefer him at club level or another country, but I wouldn’t prefer he manage England. Southgate clearly has a really good relationship with the players and has built a good atmosphere around the team.

SouthWalesImp

Southgate made an international final, Martinez fumbled a WC group stage, the difference is clear 👍

sadwalrus86

Roberto Martinez, his 2018 World Cup was very impressive and a bit underrated.

EliteKill

So a tweet with 4 images and a videos with the title "Palestinian League Cup final unlikely to resume after Israeli forces stormed the stadium at halftime and fired teargas into the stands and onto the pitch." is currently on the top of this sub. None of the images nor the video show a single Israeli soldier, and on Twitter I just saw the same pictures and video over and over again. Al Jazeera, far from an unbiased source when it comes to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, doesn't even have a story about it up 7 hours later. I've looked up [left wing](https://twitter.com/hagar_shezaf) reporters who usually publish these kind of stories, and once again found nothing. It definitely smells like fake news, but people here gobbled it up. If it happened and there is evidence, Israel should definitely be sanctioned by FIFA.

ChairmanChopsII

Does seem quite far fetched unless they’ve been watching Batman recently and taking notes

EyeSpyGuy

Hmm couldn’t find an article either. Nothing about a Palestinian (even looking under Israel) league cup match on FotMob as well. One can oppose Israel’s treatment of Palestinians in general without having to resort to misinformation.

Sh-tHouseBurnley

[Here](https://mobile.twitter.com/OnlinePalEng/status/1641562856905744385) is the best video I can find on it. There are also news articles of this happening in 2014, [2016](https://www.middleeastobserver.org/2016/08/28/israeli-soldiers-teargas-football-match-dozens-suffer-tear-gas-inhalation-in-ram-town/) and other years, making it seem to be a common occurrence. Perhaps it is misinformation but you need to Google harder before you write something off.

EliteKill

The video doesn't show a single Israeli soldier.

Sh-tHouseBurnley

Like I said: > Perhaps it is misinformation But there is some evidence and some articles to look at, I was only replying to /u/EyeSpyGuy who was saying there are no articles or proof that this match existed.

EliteKill

Articles from 7 years ago are not relevant.

Sh-tHouseBurnley

Okay dude, you obviously have an agenda, I wasn't even responding to your comment.

EliteKill

I'm trying to point our fake news about my country, of course I have an "agenda".

Sh-tHouseBurnley

Right, and I was not replying to you, I was replying to the person who was saying they could find absolutely nothing on it - I literally say that *it could still be misinformation* but to say you can't find anything would be a result of poor googling.

lewiitom

https://www.goalzz.com/?g=1671 This is the match anyway, although can't find much else about it

DankBrownBoiV2

People who think cup competitions are a better indicator of the team's quality than the league don't know ball.

Rj070707

It tests a different type of quality

my_united_account

Winning the league used to test consistency but in the top leagues now its mainly about which team has the most depth

robins420

Which dominant cup team hasn't won a league on the contrary? Barring Liverpool of 2005, Chelsea of 2012 and 2021 & Milan of 2007, all the other teams that have done well in the UCL this century, have won leagues with the same squads. So it's not an either-or argument. Typically teams that are good enough to win the UCL usually are good enough to win their domestic league too.

Bocchi_the_roc

Cup comps test the mentality and the big game aura the team has. While the league tests consistency.

AnIntoxicatedRodent

It's a different quality mostly. Nowadays there's not *that much* fewer cup matches than league matches if you go far. Manchester United could be playing as much as 27 cup matches this year and already played 20.

DankBrownBoiV2

That doesn't change much. For starters those 27 games are across 3 cup competitions and 2 of the EL games could be avoided and that's if you go all the way, which most teams don't. Also matchmaking is everything in cup games. Utd's road to EFL final was Villa, Burnley, Charlton (all at home) and Nottingham. 2 of those sides don't even play in the PL. Also you play all teams home & away in the league.

EyeSpyGuy

It’s a different mentality for both, one that is not necessarily far superior than the other. Tournament/elimination/cup football is about big moments, you show up on the day and that’s what matters. It’s why no one will be surprised if Madrid end up winning the CL again even if they lose the league to Barca. Leagues award consistency. A draw/loss isn’t exactly a good thing, particularly in title races like Liverpool and city have had and even more so in the business end of the season, but so long as you rebound well after a poor result, you will win. It’s also relative, you just have to be more consistent than the second best team. You can have the double done on you by second place and still win

CandidFella

Imagine telling someone 20 years ago about the current state of City and United. United fell harder after Alex left than Barcelona did after the Neymar transfer.

Classic-Scientist-97

For comparisons like this I like to go back to 1997/98, when Man City were relegated to the third tier, United finished 2nd (and would win the Prem again the following season), and City weren't even in the three highest placed clubs in Greater Manchester, with Bolton and most incredibly, Stockport County, finishing above them.

Harrry-Otter

I think even then everyone knew replacing Fergie wouldn’t be easy. Granted the club have impressed me with how much of a mess they’ve made of it though.

CalmaCuler

Ehh, we might be off worse tbh. We'll be in Financial trouble for a while

idonotstutter

Sporting wise man united are worse. We've won the copa del rey in 2021 and now are on track to win the league. Man united have just won their first trophy in 6 years this year.

CandidFella

Oh agreed, but in regards to football, United dropped off which they never recovered from after Alex left, while their rival City was able to take their place in top English football.

EyeSpyGuy

Some entertaining bits I saw in the aftermath of Scotland vs Spain [The Scottish football sub](https://reddit.com/r/ScottishFootball/comments/126faih/everyone_knows_we_are_bigger_than_spain_but_did/) [This Joselu chant](https://youtube.com/shorts/egn6dbligm8?feature=share) [This meme](https://i.imgur.com/X89mVPE.jpg)

LampseederBroDude51

Random stat, but it’s surprising to me how in the last decade, the team with the better H2H in El Clasico usually doesn’t win the league **2023: Real Madrid 3-1, Barcelona 2-1 (Barca set to win league)** **2022: Real Madrid 2-1, Barca 4-0 (Madrid win league)** **2021: Real Madrid 3-1, Real Madrid 2-1 (neither win league)** 2020: 0-0, Real Madrid 2-0 (Madrid win league) 2019: Barca 5-1, Barca 1-0 (Barca win league) 2018: Barca 3-0, 2-2 (Barca win league) **2017: 1-1, Barca 3-2 (Madrid win league)** 2016: Barca 4-0, Real Madrid 2-1 (Barca win league) **2015: Real Madrid 3-1, Barca 2-1 (Barca win league)** **2014: Barca 2-1, Barca 4-3 (neither win league)** **2013: 2-2, Real Madrid 2-1 (Barca win league)** **2012: Barca 3-1, Real Madrid 2-1 (Madrid win league)**

AnnieIWillKnow

Winning the battle, but not the war

LDQQXDJ

Part of me doesn’t want the final of the 2026 World Cup to be at the Estadio Azteca because the 2 people who won it there are debatably greatest of all time

thedeatheater1410

It will be in Arlington

CoolstorySteve

No chance it’s not in USA somewhere

CryptographerLife686

Messi winning the World Cup back to back to keep the trend going

PsychopathicEmpath

Canelo's beef with Messi during the WC is the randomest shit looking back at it.

[deleted]

Messi doesn't want that smoke

No-Wrongdoer9851

TIL that Sir Alex managed Scotland at the 1986 World Cup. Is this common knowledge?

SnooApples8774

I think he was assistant to Jock Stein who died so he took over briefly whilst still working as Aberdeen manager. Might have misremembered so feel free to check.

no_soc_espanyol

Why the hell is Barça so shit in europe

violenceandvomit

Spanish league weak as fuck rn

Galakt0s

Thats why 5th place Villarreal dragged bayern out of UCL last year?

no_soc_espanyol

I won’t take this from a German

_stone_age

Mentality, subpar quality and a bit of poor luck recently with injuries.

NeoIsJohnWick

They have got a great coach, all they need is few upgraades.

idonotstutter

We did upgrade our defence and funnily enough all of them got injured in time for the european games

idonotstutter

Last season ? We were shit. This season? Unlucky with injuries and that handball not called. Also need to mention that our squad's attitude whilein europe is terrible.

robins420

**Barca's results in Europe this season:** Games played: 8 Wins - 2(Against Plzen, a team you should beat with your reserves) Losses - 4 Draws - 2 Just not being good enough is the real reason, a one-off handball or injuries isn't the reason you've relegation form in Europe.

idonotstutter

>Just not being good enough is the real reason, a one-off handball or injuries isn't the reason you've relegation form in Europe. I did mention that our squad's attitude in Europe is poor?

robins420

Making a point about the team's attitude doesn't equate to saying they aren't good enough in Europe, does it? It instead says they don't give much of a fk about it. The reality is, they tried and they failed, quite badly.

LampseederBroDude51

Horrible mentality, Roma, Liverpool, and Bayern With Xavi in, it will take some time but Barcelona will probably become a threat in the UCL again

violenceandvomit

Eintracht broke their spirit, heart and will to live.

Polskidro

Bayern had nothing to do with mentality. Bayern was just at an insane level and Barca was completely unable to compete or keep up in intensity. More so outclassed in every way than a mental lapse.

LampseederBroDude51

Bayern were way better than Barcelona of course, but that was also a complete capitulation. Being worse than your opponent might result in a 3 or 4 goal defeat but it doesn’t just result in a 6 goal defeat, especially a team like Barcelona and the way the game actually happened But I get what you mean. The mental issue was not as evident as it was when they were beaten by Roma and Liverpool.

[deleted]

farhanmuhd13

Or that Davies pen in the first half

farhanmuhd13

We have the second most UCLs in the 21st century after Madrid lol we're just going through a bad phase rn

no_soc_espanyol

Yes I mean why are we so shit in the last couple of years

farhanmuhd13

Transitional phase and horrible team building post Laporta. Rosell and Barto were cancers to the club

Rj070707

5 CL is not shit, been almost 8 years since last, but its like saying Milan are shit in Europe Shit in Europe is more like Arsenal or PSG

wouly18

Watch your mouth

my_united_account

Are you saying you are _not_ shit in Europe?

no_soc_espanyol

Or what?

Galakt0s

Or PSG will buy dembele for 240 mill and still loose the UCL

EyeSpyGuy

Remontadas after your most recent UCL win is probably a mentality thing. Underrating Roma, and also the video of the half time at anfield at only 1-0 down on the night with Jordi Alba looking terrified. The thrashings by Bayern might just be a symptom of the poor squad building which is why your finances are where they are. Xavi is also a relatively new coach, but also some of the results in the group stage this season were down to bad luck with injuries to your defense

idonotstutter

>Jordi Alba looking terrified. That's an understatement. He was crying.

justsomeguynbd

Any other emergency appendectomies happen mid-season?

justsomeguynbd

> More common than you think I guess so, thanks for the links. Can’t believe VVD handled his the same way as my boomer father where he just dealt with it for multiple days and almost died before going to get treatment.

AnIntoxicatedRodent

He didn't though. He went to the doctor, it's just our typical Dutch doctors way of saying well, 'just wait and see if it gets better! ' if you come in with anything nowadays unless you're clearly dieing. Can't fault him for waiting it out if that's literally the advice you get. How a doctor can miss the extremely clear signs of appendicitis is beyond me and it happens more than you think.

my_united_account

Didn't want to reset the hasnt been dribbled past by an attacker stat

my_united_account

You're literally only playing in one competition, stop crying

bmoviescreamqueen

??? How are you people that worked up over someone saying they want less players to get injured? Incredible.

icemankiller8

That one competition is much more important than what United are doing

frankyforeskin

[oh stop crying](https://i.redd.it/jbt1x32ehcna1.jpg)

icemankiller8

Our title rivals have the second least this doesn’t prove your point at all

Mediocre_Nova

How up to date is this? Feels like our injury luck has been awful this season and I know it's worse than ever right now but I don't think it's just recency bias

arseking15

Every team has injuries, this is literally impossible to ask. We just have to keep adding to our depth this summer

AliceInMidtjylland

You've had it this season.

icemankiller8

Wrong Jesus got injured for a while and if he didn’t the league would have been over by now, now Saliba is injured at a crucial time while Tomi is out which is probably gonna cost us the league, Partey got injured before the united and city games

officiallyjax

How many goals does Mo Salah get in the next 3 games (City away, Chelsea away, Arsenal home)?

EgosJohnPolo

Has a good record against the Top 6 since he's joined so can definitely see atleast 2/3.

Sh-tHouseBurnley

Possibly 0, possibly 6.

icemankiller8

3 all against arsenal

my_united_account

1 against Arsenal

ManLikeNiz

2 and both against City

Flamengo81-19

!flair :Chelsea_s_Rampant_Lion:

RawIsLaw_

It would be jokes if he joins man utd and we get Hojlund v Haaland conversations on here. It would be like comparing Mario vs Wario

Sonic-Bo0m

Same energy as Haaland and Mbappe conversations. One far outclasses the other.

RawIsLaw_

Duhh.. I’m talking about the similarities in their name, Northern European ethnicity, playing position

Papayalo

Nah Mbappe is really good too

Sonic-Bo0m

But he can only score hat tricks in world cup finals. Can he do that against Burnley after de bruyne's shots rebound off the keeper?

ConferencePure6652

I think comparing haaland to wario is a bit much no?

transtifa

An insult to Wario if you ask me

InventeInventeRoman

prestianni has the ‘it’ factor man, his football fascinates me. i close my eyes and i see his name with the 10 of Argentina.

reddit1902

Only future number 10 should be Nico Paz. He is truly special.

CryptographerLife686

The weight of that number 10 jersey is crazy

juankruh1250

New Messi?

InventeInventeRoman

Imposible. But he will probably be on of the best in the world for a long time

hicabundatleones

Too bad we will kidnap him

kplo

He is not a C tier talent I am afraid

InventeInventeRoman

He has ambition, he won’t sacrifice that to be a starter sooner for Italy.

hicabundatleones

Honestly there’s no valid reason why he should accept to play for Italy. I hope he comes to Napoli to start his career in Europe though

InventeInventeRoman

Would be pretty good but you have Lozano or Kvara in his positions so it wouldn’t really make sense, his first entry in Europe will probably be somewhere he can be a starter (not that I don’t think he could beat out chucky).

hicabundatleones

Lozano is leaving this summer most certainly, Spalletti would improve and develop his potential even more imo

PegaponyPrince

Where has Lozano been linked? I've only seen Chelsea as of now

KensaiVG

Ya sé que no es lo mismo porque Gianluca no es bostero Pero Prestianni-Echeverri the new Riquelme-Aimar, who says no

chatfarm

Mancini intensifies 🥴

Sad2BeHappy

> close my eyes and i see his name with the 10 of Italy

InventeInventeRoman

Won’t happen pal

wouly18

What’s the worst performance you’ve ever seen? Bakayoko vs Watford is up there

icemankiller8

Mustafi basically every week after his purple patch at the start. The most brainless defender I’ve ever seen in football he wound always play the exact same every game he was only good/bad depending on the opposition players realising what he would do. He dived into tackled way too often for no reason often not making them, his positioning was awful, his decision making was awful, his passing wasn’t consistent. Idk how he lasted as long as he did.

working-acct

Ali Dia vs Soton

idonotstutter

Lautaro Martinez in the world cup

SunnyCloudyRainy

Vlahovic v Sampdoria He made 3 touches in the whole first half

L34hhhh

Lukaku vs Croatia Lautaro vs Australia and France

LovieBeard

As good as he's been this season, Bremer v Napoli

juankruh1250

There are many Pique vs Inter Varane Vs Man City Lautaro Vs France Karius Vs Liverpool Lukaku Vs Croatia

X_Underscore_X

>~~Lautaro Vs France~~ Lautaro vs World Cup

juankruh1250

The fact that Messi won the WC with Lautaro it's a GOAT achievement by itself

Lyrical_Forklift

Lukaku vs Crystal Palace. Man had seven touches all game. Two in the first half and one was from kick off.

doomboxmf

Yeah that’s legitimately the one game where I reckon you could’ve put me on the bloody pitch and I’d have been more involved. It genuinely looked like he was spectating, 7 touches total and two were kick offs lol

Content-Medicine-305

Lukaku vs croatia

CrebTheBerc

Any of Bebe's apps for United. Credit to him he's made a solid career for himself, but he looked like he'd been picked out of the stands every time he played Honorary mention to Tyler blackett although I'd cut him some slack for being a youth player in his first few apps for United. Looked like a deer in headlights

Dicey12

Dembele vs Argentina Varane vs Man City

justsomeguynbd

Dembele vs Argentina was mine. Saw somewhere recently that he might have been sick which would be good I guess because I’ve never seen someone that good play that bad.

Dicey12

Yep Mbappe was taking all the attention he should have been feasting on that back line.

CampariAmor

Gomez vs Napoli Ziyech vs Zagreb Fernandinho vs Belgium

_LebronsHairline_

Probably not even the worst Gomez performance of this season

LampseederBroDude51

Nelson Semedo vs Bayern is up there

Truffles413

Trevor Chalobah against Fulham this season was just as bad as Bakayoko vs Watford. Some Chelsea fans in that match thread even agreed with me.

AnnieIWillKnow

Bakayoko tops it. We got better when he was sent off

Cawn123

Joe Gomez against Napoli. He was being absolutely mauled alive, I don't think he did anything right.

ddrdavei2

All-time is hard to answer, but the first one that comes to my mind from this season is Gollini (Fiorentina GK) vs Basaksehir in the Conference League They lost 3-0 and he was the worst goalkeeper I've seen in a long time

Truffles413

He was shocking for us. One of the worst keepers I've seen.

transtifa

Watching him at Spurs was a nightmare, he is truly fucking terrible

EyeSpyGuy

Lovren shitting the bed vs Spurs @ wembley in 2017 that he got subbed off before half time

juankruh1250

Best Midfielders of the last 15 years 1. Iniesta 2. Modric 3. Xavi 4. Pirlo 5. David Silva 6. De Bruyne 7. Gerrard 8. Kroos 9. Lampard 10. Veratti Which change would you make to the list? Or perhaps I missed a player?

The_Big_Cheese_09

>De Bruyne If De Bruyne is being considered a midfielder then Thomas Muller definitely deserves a spot in here.

juankruh1250

Why wouldn't you consider him one? He basically plays in the 4-3-3 in Pep's system while Muller plays as a attacking player in a 4-2-3-1, Muller barely drops deep so it's almost impossible to me to considider him a midfielder. Also, Muller passing range it's nowhere as good as those other guys

Sonic-Bo0m

How can you put Gerrard, kDB and David Silva ahead of Kroos?? They don't come close. Kroos should be number 5 behind Pirlo.

juankruh1250

Because I like them more as a player? David Silva is basically a lefty Iniesta

working-acct

No Scholes is a disgrace.

juankruh1250

Scholes was born in 1974, last 15 years isn't his era really

[deleted]

Very hard to rate them beyond the first three, but I'd probably due tiers as follows: Xavi Iniesta Modric Kroos Pirlo De Bruyne Lampard Gerrard Fabregas Ozil All the rest

Sad_gooner

Ozil should be on the list

juankruh1250

Not for me, he was too lazy defensively.

_LebronsHairline_

David Silva way too high if we are being honest

doomboxmf

Should not be above Gerrard and Lampard, and may be a hot take but I don’t necessarily put KdB above them either

Dicey12

Kroos is way too low multiple league titles, CLs, and a WC. Always showed up on the big stage top 5 minimum

_LebronsHairline_

On achievements yeah, but individually idk if he’s better than any of the guys ahead of him, except maybe David Silva although that’s a weird comparison

Dicey12

He's better than all three of them. One of the best deep-lying midfielders to touch a pitch

IshtiakSami

Kroos should be fourth on this list. On my own list for the last 15 years, I'd rank him sixth. How anyone doesn't rate him is beyond me. Best German midfielder since Matthäus, and I'd say only Schweinsteiger (maybe Özil?) comes close.

_LebronsHairline_

Kimmich is better than schweinsteiger and probably close to Kroos’ level

The71stSean

Do you count Mueller as a forward? I am curious.

IshtiakSami

Forgot about Müller ngl. And no, I don't I'd count him as a forward.

Dicey12

He's a better player than Ozil but not more talented. Dude was key to our team winning those CLs.

RomeoLavia

It really just depends on what you're basing this on. Is it career, peak, or just how good they were as footballers as a whole?

juankruh1250

A mix of all of them

Rj070707

Iniesta, Modric, Xavi, Lampard, Kroos, Pirlo, KDB, Busquets, Kante, Gerrard

Bocchi_the_roc

David Silva at 5 and Lampard at 9 ? Yeah... This list 💀💀

juankruh1250

He was better unless you are a Chelsea fan

Bocchi_the_roc

Lmao sure dude.

doomboxmf

I wouldn’t say he was definitively better - Lampard is severely underrated clearly, he’s the best goal scoring midfielder in prem history and he was absolutely capable of pulling out world class assists too

Terrible_Physics_157

No he wasn’t lmao. Lampard definitely better.

doomboxmf

Ok good I’m not going crazy then - I feel like Lampard is weirdly one of the most underrated players around. Arguably the best midfielder in prem history lol

[deleted]

Kroos at 8 😂he could easily be 4

chatfarm

1. Enzo Fernandez!

IshtiakSami

I'd move Xavi to first and Kroos to fourth. Busquets not being here is a legitimate crime. Also missing players like Schweinsteiger, Özil, Casemiro, Fernandinho, Mascherano, Fábregas, Kaká, di Maria, etc. Edit: My top ten would be: 1. Xavi 2. Iniesta 3. Modrić 4. Kaká 5. Busquets 6. Kroos 7. Pirlo 8. Schweinsteiger 8. Casemiro 10. de Bruyne 4-8 were the hardest to rank.

juankruh1250

Well, I wanted to limit to 10 players

IshtiakSami

I really don't see how Veratti deserves to be here over any of the players I've mentioned.

juankruh1250

I love him

denisthemenis21

Is that certain? [His tweet](https://twitter.com/matallanas/status/1641417544044011523) seems doesn't seem like a definitive statement.

Zizou3peat

We are actually so easy to figure out and defeat. Park a bus, have technical enough players to accurately counter and kill us off. No positional play to create overloads or isolate wingers. No proper pressing or counter pressing shape. Just pass to Vini and inshallah. Or pray our midfielders come up with a bit of magic now that Benz is half fit. Unless Carlo wins CL again I would like to see us with a new coach and new ideas next season. Pochettino’s pressing ideals and his coaching to develop young players will be ideal, so will Nagelsmann’s tactical flexibility.

Polskidro

Yes so easy to figure out, that only Barca has been able to take advantage of it

Zizou3peat

Do you watch La Liga? Do you know how much we have struggled in the league?
