Am I maybe misremembering but we've been awful at set pieces for a while or at the very best not particularly great. Barry seems to be very highly rated for a reason so I'll take the word of other people who know a lot more than me but his expertise clearly wasn't showing up on the pitch. Either that or our players are just *that* bad at them and now we'll get even worse.
I mean, right now we got Badiashille who is 6'4", Wes Fofa who is 6'3", kouli who is 6'1", Zakaria who is 6'3"
I feel like when those 3/4 are on the pitch together it should be the same theoretically as rudiger and the boys, where height is concerned anyway.
Would also add Kai and RLC (who’s played a decent amount under potter) also Thiago has a great leap on him even at his age so we definitely have threats in the air
Yeah forgot about rlc though, guys huge aswell, Kai's pretty lengthy too. Didn't say Thiago because he's not as tall, but aerially he might be the best of all, has great timing on his jumps, gets high and aggressive in the air. Definitely another plus
I think just to do with those players instincts to attack the ball in the box. The current set of players can’t even head to the ball towards the keeper.
I don't know, to be honest, besides Zakaria, I would've said all 3 of those centre backs were pretty good with their heads. We'll never know what Barry is like, and if Tuchel wants him at Bayern there's probably something he's doing right, but maybe a change would be good for us
We've only conceded 4 goals from set pieces in the PL last season. Only City had less conceded goals from set pieces. I don't think the main problem here is Barry.
We should have put him on gardening leave until after either us or Bayern were knocked out of the CL
Feel like he will be a traitor to our tactics if we face Bayern
If your not trying to be a dick: the tactics that our back room staff work with our players on. Including their weaknesses, strengths, habits, etc.
He knows exactly what our team works on every training session and that would be invaluable info for an opposing team in a knockout match
I'm not seeing anyone say we will improve when he's gone, but I am seeing a fair amount of doubt because we haven't been that good at scoring set pieces. Of course, partly, if we would stop hitting the first man maybe we would score more.
I’m not trying to be a dick, but if you can’t recognize the tactics Potter has employed, you don’t know much about football. The issue with Potter isn’t the lack of tactics, it’s extreme tactical inconsistencies. He’s gotten it very right, and very wrong.
Here’s a Twitter thread on the tactics we used against Everton: https://twitter.com/johyancruyff/status/1639215739549646849?s=46&t=3eGzgiVPCcJpc1jMQwMiLA
I was referring to the set piece tactics, you can clearly see the style of play potter wants us to play and it’s very different from Tuchels style even the 3 atb system is used differently. He’s also used Kai differently than Tuchel. His in game subs while not always popular show another side of his tactical knowledge even though sometimes I feel he’s a bit naive but he’s also young so it goes with that
He won't have anymore insight into our normal tactics that can't be learned studying tape and I guarantee no tactics have been formed for a potential match with Bayern
> He won’t have anymore insight into our normal facts is than studying tape
That’s simply incorrect and an extremely lazy take.
Tape only shows you the 90min on pitch results. There are many other pieces of information that are are communicated across players and coaches during training that aren’t represented on tape.
The obvious difference being Brighton's fate in the PL does not hinge upon their 2 matches vs Chelsea, Chelsea's fate in the CL does depend on the 2 matches we could face Bayern in should we advance. But hey you knew that.
Well, not gonna sweat over anyone who wants to leave. No one person is bigger than the club. I am sure we will get a replacement twice better. Progression is the key, not regression, if we can get someone who improves us on set pieces, no one will even remember Barry.
If someone I like leaves my work place it affects my attitude towards going I don’t know about you. He was well liked and a personal guy, more than just “our set piece coach”.
Lol. You need to grow up then. Your co-worker isn't paying your bills and they aren't responsible for your well-being. Barry was hired to do one job and we have been really bad at it. He wasn't signed up to make friends and make players happy. We also have no idea if he is liked or not. That's just your speculation. We let go Tuchel, do you think he will be a bigger miss than Tuchel?
>“I had a family member who wasn’t well and Barry was the only member of the club I told about it. He’d be the one I’d go and cry to. I left my last job at Sheffield United this year and things haven’t been great but he will still message, ‘Everything OK?’, and things like that. I feel like I can talk to him about anything.
>“That’s why he’s going to be a great manager. Not only is he good at coaching, but he also has the human side. It’s very rare to find someone who has the whole package, that he cares about people. He can sense when something is wrong.”
>One of his other tasks at Wigan was to take sessions with the players who hadn’t been involved on match day. It was a two-part task — maintaining their fitness and raising their spirits. The drills were always imaginative, constructive and, as a result, well received.
>Talking to a head coach about why they’re not in the side can be an intimidating task for a player. Barry was often on hand to act as a conduit for them.
>“I would go to him if I was having a tough time,” Naismith adds. “He would be honest and tell me why he didn’t think I was in the XI. He would say you’re doing this or that, but point out the things I was doing well too and encourage me to stick with it. But he’s not the kind to just big you up for the sake of it. He is honest, he tells you how it is. You always knew it was coming from a good place.
>“When Wigan were going through administration last year and I was having a tough time looking for a club, I just needed that advice from someone. He was the first person I called because I know he has my best interests at heart — he is like that with everyone.
>“But it wasn’t just about his seven-year plan. He would always talk to me about it. He would say to me, ‘Even though it’s tough now, keep working. You know your next seven years will be better than your last’. That is his mindset, that things will get better.”
https://theathletic.com/3004668/2021/12/10/what-he-brings-to-the-team-is-priceless-anthony-barrys-rapid-rise-from-league-one-to-key-figure-at-chelsea/
I remember reading about how personal he was with the Wigan players when he first joined, so no this not "my speculation".
> But Tuchel and his assistants were quickly impressed by him anyway. The fact he knew the English game, enjoyed a good bond with the players and provided tactical acumen, meant he was quickly identified as an asset.
Also, less of the cheek mate, getting on with colleagues is key, especially in a team sport like football.
You are quoting me what he did in Wigan. Chelsea is a bigger club and he was only hired to do one job. Which we still haven't improved at all. He won't be a bigger miss than the past managers or past top class players we had.
Yes, but that's his personality, I have heard from podcasts that he has a strong rapport with the players too. He's a competent coach, and we will definitely miss him. Even Tuchel mentioned that he had an excellent connection with the players when he joined, as quoted in the article. So it's not just limited to his time at Wigan...
Don’t know, but he was Dean Smiths assistant at Villa so he’s obviously got the right ones for a coaching job in the PL. Not that the qualifications really matter anyway.
Why? So idiots can keep throwing shit at him and basically ruin the player reputation for any younger fans growing up?
The man himself isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed but an absolute legend of the club. The amount of toxicity our fans have learned in the last 3-4 years makes me not want the club to hire anymore legends.
To be fair he already did a lot of damage to his own rep by shilling NFT scams, as you say, absolute legend for Chelsea, but i’d rather he stayed away from the limelight
We were good at set pieces because Rudiger, Alonso and Zouma were monsters along with Giroud. We’re very poor now because the players are extremely short that we have now.
Yeah, I made a mistake saying short…I mean the instinct to attack the ball more aggressively in our box and their.
Silver and Havertz gets to most of the balls in box wether we’re attacking or defending. Fofana and KK isn’t good in the box regarding heading along with RLC.
No worries but I have to disagree, Fofana recently scored a header and he almost had another one the game after. KK as well gets to some balls but he’s not as good of a header. RLC i agree with isn’t really that good but we also don’t really use him as a threat that way enough imo
We lost a lot hight since Rudiger, Zouma, Giroud and Alonso left.
Flashback to Zouma being the league's top scorer at some point. He's a cat kicking cunt but the big lad can head the ball.
I mean, right now we got Badiashille who is 6'4", Wes Fofa who is 6'3", kouli who is 6'1", Zakaria who is 6'3" I feel like when those 3/4 are on the pitch together it should be the same theoretically as rudiger and the boys, where height is concerned anyway.
And Havertz is 6'3" compared to Giroud's 6'4". Plus, Giroud wasn't playing as much as 5'11" Werner or 6'2" Tammy.
Being good in the air is not all about height, you have to be good at timing and accuracy Falcao was like 5’10? And he was great in the air
Yes I'm well aware, was just illustrating, we have plenty of tall players
Would also add Kai and RLC (who’s played a decent amount under potter) also Thiago has a great leap on him even at his age so we definitely have threats in the air
Yeah forgot about rlc though, guys huge aswell, Kai's pretty lengthy too. Didn't say Thiago because he's not as tall, but aerially he might be the best of all, has great timing on his jumps, gets high and aggressive in the air. Definitely another plus

Badiashile, Fofana, Chalobah, and Koulibaly aren't short, we've just been not great at set pieces I think.
We were awful, then we were decent when Barry came under TT, now we are bad.
Barry came under Lampard fyi. He was there way before Tuchel.
We've only conceded 4 goals from set pieces in the PL last season. Only City had less conceded goals from set pieces. I don't think the main problem here is Barry.
We should have put him on gardening leave until after either us or Bayern were knocked out of the CL Feel like he will be a traitor to our tactics if we face Bayern
Not even trying to be a dick but what tactics ?
If your not trying to be a dick: the tactics that our back room staff work with our players on. Including their weaknesses, strengths, habits, etc. He knows exactly what our team works on every training session and that would be invaluable info for an opposing team in a knockout match
All our set piece plays for a start?
Well people on here are celebrating that he's leaving and saying that his set pieces are awful and we'll improve with him gone
I'm not seeing anyone say we will improve when he's gone, but I am seeing a fair amount of doubt because we haven't been that good at scoring set pieces. Of course, partly, if we would stop hitting the first man maybe we would score more.
Since Chilwell started taking corners we look a threat almost every time
Yeah Chilwell does seem to have a better corner taking technique than the others we have.
People are underestimating us losing Rudiger and a good Mendy from our ability to defend set pieces
I’m not trying to be a dick, but if you can’t recognize the tactics Potter has employed, you don’t know much about football. "Just go out there and have fun lads."
I wouldn’t put it past any of them talking despite not being an official coach for Bayern.
He won't have anymore insight into our normal tactics that can't be learned studying tape and I guarantee no tactics have been formed for a potential match with Bayern
> He won’t have anymore insight into our normal facts is than studying tape That’s simply incorrect and an extremely lazy take. Tape only shows you the 90min on pitch results. You are assuming we are going through and Bayern can beat Man City…both aren’t happening mate
Still think it's stupid, put him on gardening leave until the summer
If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen - Brighton
The obvious difference being Brighton's fate in the PL does not hinge upon their 2 matches vs Chelsea, Chelsea's fate in the CL does depend on the 2 matches we could face Bayern in should we advance. But hey you knew that.
It's amazing how reactionary some people are. One minute he's a coaching gem and we all love him, and the next he's a traitor, snake, useless, etc.
Well, not gonna sweat over anyone who wants to leave. No one person is bigger than the club. I am sure we will get a replacement twice better. Progression is the key, not regression, if we can get someone who improves us on set pieces, no one will even remember Barry.
Bye bye Barry! We have been atrocious with set pieces. Don't think he is going to be missed.
He was more than just a set piece coach he was very in tune with the players, not sure if this is a good thing for the dressing room.
"Very in tune with players" how is that helping us? He is here to fix only one thing and we are still among the worst.
If someone I like leaves my work place it affects my attitude towards going I don’t know about you. He was well liked and a personal guy, more than just “our set piece coach”.

Chelsea had the second best record for set pieces last season.
Fantastic coach, he will be missed. I do wonder if our set piece defending will improve though, as its been less than stellar lately
Bye 👋
Bye Felicia
Best of luck baz
Good luck!
This is not surprising to hear, but what I want to know is the compensation we get
Don’t let the door hit your cunt ass on the way out Anthony Or do I don’t care
He can fuck right off
Get JT in in his place
What are JT's coaching qualifications?
I frequently post in /r/Chelseafc match threads
Don’t know, but he was Dean Smiths assistant at Villa so he’s obviously got the right ones for a coaching job in the PL. Not that the qualifications really matter anyway.
I accept
