That catcher was catching 100+ mph bouncers. Like what the fuck he was in god mode, he only lost one and it was with no runners.
Edit: my favorite thing about Ohtani is his motion. When he does that “zone out” to the third base line, it ALWAYS looks like he’s trying not to laugh.
With a full count too! You know this was the perfect and satisfying so much that even fans in the US are 100% absolutely happy for Ohtani!
Its absolutely hilarious that this was the literal face off everyone wanted to see since last night: Trout vs Ohtani, strikeout or home run! Like damn, I'm absolutely thrilled for all of baseball right now!
I sports-hate the Japanese team because of Korean national pride and lost money because I bet on the US and I was still happy for him and psyched at what happened.
One of the best baseball AND sporting moments I've seen. You just had to watch this live, not knowing what was going to happen but two of the best in their prime going at each other for the first ever time, for the biggest prize. Chills man.
People won't respect the comparison, but you are correct.
(I do love how both of them flipped roles for that match because of the insane Toronto crowd reaction for Hogan.)
There was a moment in the broadcast angle where it was McNeil at plate, and warming up is Betts with Trout in the wings and you can see their names all lined up with Ohtani on the mound in the distance out of focus.
Most incredible shot I’ve ever seen. It was like “this is the work he has to do to win this. Strike out the hit champion, Mookie and Trout. Jesus tittyfuckin christ”
This is why the one game knockout format works so well for international events. It creates so much hype and excitement for every knockout match to be win or go home
I can imagine a future in the 2030s when all the money from the TV deals has run out where none of us pay attention to the regular season and instead we just have international games throughout the year. Winter? No problem, we have a *whole other hemisphere*
2020 KBO games worked just fine for me.
MLB \*knows\* this and just doesn't care. If they can package entertainment into a two hour package, they will, no matter what it does to the game.
"Something has to bring joy into the day. I’ve always thought that the six months during the baseball season, there was something in the day that wasn’t there the other six months in winter. It was not that you had to listen to the game, but that you could if you needed it."
Thomas Boswell, Ken Burns Baseball
I read Bob Nightengale's article about this this morning, he said only 24 times in Trout's career has he struck out without making any contact with the ball. Insane stuff!
If he had another AB against ohtani, he probably would have gotten contact. Theyve said that Trout has never batted off ohtani, even in training. So, he's never seen it in the box.
Ohtani has nerves of titanium. His clutch as fuck double last night. Closing out this game against the Fish Man. My two loves are baseball and hockey and he's easily my favorite athlete between either sport. We're so lucky to watch him.
Seriously. It doesn't even look like he's breathing hard, considering what this championship means for his country. Next level composure. A true unicorn.
Mike Trout is, by consensus, the greatest living hitter. Shohei Ohtani is a god-tier pitcher --- maybe not #1 but for sure top 5 among active players. Pitchers are normally terrible batters; [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVFsq9FQBlc) is one of the most memorable moments in baseball history, because it's a pitcher hitting his first career home run after almost an entire career in the majors. This was a big deal.
In 2021, Shohei Ohtani hit 46 home runs while also being a top-tier pitcher. The last player to do this was named Babe Ruth, and he didn't even do those two things in the same season.
Both Trout and Ohtani have played for the same team, the Los Angeles Angels, their whole MLB careers. This is the first time they have ever faced off against each other, and it's the last at-bat of the final match of the World Baseball Classic, which is exactly what it sounds like, unlike the World Series. You couldn't write a better ending.
Imagine if Lebron James and Michael Jordan were in their prime at the same time but were on the same team and so they never got to face each other. One year they compete in an international tournament on different teams and with 30 seconds on the clock they have to play 1 on 1 for the win.
It's the last batter of the last inning, of the final game of the tournament. The batter and pitcher normally play for the same team in MLB, and they are both excellent. It's tense, and it's good to see them scrap!
As amazing as that Munetaka Murakami moment was, Mexico fought like hell the whole tournament and was awesome to watch. They were the second best team in the WBC this year, imo.
I just finished watching the recording of the game and the post game ceremony in its entirety. It was so great that l cried. Since the game ended, all of the TV news programs are spending most of its air time to recap the whole game mixed with behind the scene footage. I didn’t see this much coverage on baseball at the Tokyo olympics even Japan won gold. I think this WBC is going to be talked about for years to come. I’ve been a baseball fan since childhood and went through the sport’s ups and downs over the last decades. I think this WBC really showed me that baseball is still as entertaining and wonderful as l found it to be when l was a child and l can FEEL that others share my feeling. That’s really special! Oh for your information, I’m a gal.
I thought the atmosphere in the Mexico-Japan game was better. Mexicans really know how to cheer on their team. After the game, I saw more Mexicans congratulating Japanese fans on the win. They even congratulated my son and I and we’re not even Japanese. We’re Filipinos. 😂 As my son put it, he thought Team USA fans were a bit salty.
I’ll give it up to the Fox crew who kept the talking to a minimum. Easy to mess up the ending and talk all over the match up. They mostly stayed out of the way.
Even though he went slider and not fastball to end it.
Those little historical tidbits about the U.S. -> Japan baseball connection during the last couple innings were absolutely fantastic. Same with hearing the relationship between Japan's manager and Ohtani. Just pure entertainment for a baseball fan.
Honestly if you’re a player I don’t know how you wouldn’t wanna be a part of this after watching the WBC this year. I have a feeling the US will be even more stacked in 2026.
No doubt this moment was great but can’t help but think this will destroy their friendship forever
Angels will have to trade 1 of these 2 to the Braves to avoid locker room drama
I feel they're good natured enough to avoid it. An example is in the 2004 Olympics in basketball, a stacked Team USA with Tim Duncan lost to team Argentina in the semifinals with Manu Ginobili dominating the game. Argentina would go on to win, and there was no chemistry issues after that. In fact, the teammates would go on to win the NBA championship the next year, and two more in the next decade. And retired as part of an iconic teammate trio with Parker.
Trout has had to deal with magnitudes more sadness in his career than Ohtani has, so I think most of us were pulling for him to finally have his moment.
everything about this was great. 9th inning 2 outs down by 1 with one of the greatest players up to hit while Ohtani smokes 2 fastballs and gets into a full count then striking him out with a slider. i love baseball so much
I wasn't able to watch the game w/ the sound on but it gave me a completely objective view of the umps strike zone last night from the 4th inning on. There were, by count, maybe 2 misses that were on the edge of the box but they *did* cancel one another out as they benefitted each team. Beyond that, I was talking about how both pitchers were nibbling and painting the corners for long stretches and the ump was nailing it. Got to give credit where it is due - from my end he called a *GREAT* game from balls/strikes. Now I wonder if it was a Japanese ump. Can someone confirm?
Seriously, this matchup gave me World Cup Finals vibes.
As great as Ohtani is, he needed this WBC win if he was going to cement himself as the GOAT. To take this Japanese team to the top the way Ichiro and Daisuke (who is not just a legend in Japan, but a GOD) have done in the past.
I am still in disbelief Trout missed that second pitch. I cannot count the number of times I've seen him absolutely destroy a fastball in the lower third. Ohtani with the nerves of steel challenging him like that. Insane.
After this insane tournament. Especially these last few games. We have to go back to meaningless baseball games until September. I'm not sure I can do that. I am not actually sure I can go back to watching the Angels in a week.
Bottom 9, down by one, 3-2 count, Ohtani vs Trout.
Idk how the fuck MLB scripted this but you couldn't ask for a better way to end such an incredible WBC.
Pretty disgusting and disappointing but sadly not surprising all the hate and fucked up things I’m seeing people post on instagram under anything highlighting japans win. People are sick. Congrats Japan, what an amazing tournament.
Seeing the comments on the House of highlights post on Instagram really highlights the bigotry of people... Crazy to see that people have no shame about what the post publically on social media
Reminds me of the World Cup Final last year. Messi vs Mbappe. Two superstars who are also teammates going at it for the biggest prize. Congrats to Japan!
They were 100+ from a guy who started and ended the AB with sliders that broke about 18". Tough to time up a fastball that quick against a guy who has a slider like that in his back pocket.
1-0 fastball was missed, 1-1 fastball was hopefully the adjustment needed to the velo.
The 2-1 fuck you fastball was blown right by Trout though. If there was ever a chance to get a hit, that was the one.
I am a casual in my baseball knowledge, but even then I can feel the significance of this strike out. I got fucking goosebumps man, the passion from Ohtani after that strikeout is nothing the scoff at.
I love sports man
Trout looks like he was grown in a lab to be a baseball player. Guy looks like his house has a baseball diamond setup with no other floors and he moves from one base to the next during his nightly routine
yea after watching this I dont know how you can have it in the playoffs. MLB *needs* these high drama/tension moments, and you simply can't have them when guys are under a clock
Fuck the pitch clock. This is the last time you'll watch a moment like this where baseball players are just playing baseball and taking their time in a big moment.
Ohtani gets bragging rights for the season, and Trout can't even say he didn't get any pitches to hit - he got 2 100-MPH fastballs right down broadway and struck out on a masterpiece of a slider.
I was at a bar for a trivia night. The entire bar stopped the trivia mid-round to watch this whole at-bat. It was electric. Never seen anything like it.

That slider was absolutely filthy - my goodness.
A strike for about 59 feet
I wouldn't even have been mad (maybe a little) had Trout laid off and they called it a strike.
And right after a couple of 100 mph fastballs.
And a couple 100+ mph whoopsidaisys Ohtani was throwing outright fire.
Seriously. Two unhittable 100 mph fastballs down the middle and then this, 86 mph that moved a feet sideways. just filthy.
Baseball Savant and Gameday called it a Sweeper. 36 inches of diagonal break.
Shohei waited his whole life to throw that pitch and he delivered.
"This guy's the out you've been waiting your whole life for kid."
A disgusting act!
Pin this shit to the top of the sub and replay it forever.
Seeing Trout step into the box and Ohtani on the mound was straight up chills
Boss fight moment
With a full count too! You know this was the perfect and satisfying so much that even fans in the US are 100% absolutely happy for Ohtani! Its absolutely hilarious that this was the literal face off everyone wanted to see since last night: Trout vs Ohtani, strikeout or home run! Like damn, I'm absolutely thrilled for all of baseball right now!
It’s can’t be real man
What is this, a crossover episode?
Life is a simulation confirmed!
It was beautiful. Was bummed the US lost, was stoked for ohtani. And I dislike the angels lol
So do the angels
I sports-hate the Japanese team because of Korean national pride and lost money because I bet on the US and I was still happy for him and psyched at what happened.
Play in a way that honors the baseball gods and you will be rewarded
Some real anime shit
One of the best baseball AND sporting moments I've seen. You just had to watch this live, not knowing what was going to happen but two of the best in their prime going at each other for the first ever time, for the biggest prize. Chills man.
Literally "imagine if Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant played 1 on 1" type shit.
even crazier considering they are teammates though
it'd be like if Kobe and Shaq were going at it in an Olympics final
This was so cool because it (almost) never happens in baseball!
I thought they were both trying to hold back a smile. Like Reus and Lewandowski
Not to mention the literal dark knight soundtrack playing on 2-2
Either result was going to be a W in my mind. Great baseball moment.
I'm sure they discussed this very probability beforehand. A true moment for the ages. I'm still in awe.
[Like Hogan vs. Rock at Wrestlemania](https://youtu.be/vs01TOrus2A?t=24)
People won't respect the comparison, but you are correct. (I do love how both of them flipped roles for that match because of the insane Toronto crowd reaction for Hogan.)
I was there for this show! The feeling in the arena was incredible not to mention it was LOUD AF
Tough situation for Trout ... how often has he seen pitches from Ohtani? Was this his first AB against him?
They've probably done it in practice, but no way Ohtani released his limits and threw 102 in practice
I think I heard a few months backed that Ohtani's never pitched to Trout in practice.
The moment needs to be captured in the only way possible....a hand drawing by u/Diditforthestory
Do I even need to watch the 2023 mlb season? Feel like this was peak baseball for the year
We were definitely spoiled by a lot of great games and moments. MLB will have to hire some better script writers Anime has won
This is why the one game knockout format works so well for international events. It creates so much hype and excitement for every knockout match to be win or go home

Seriously. I’m going to have to pretend about 162 shitty Cubs games now as if they’re going to stack up to this at all? Ugh
Their game in London might be cool lol
Protip they aren't. That is what baseball is all about though. Just having it on and really not caring what happens 95% of the time.
"Something has to bring joy into the day. I’ve always thought that the six months during the baseball season, there was something in the day that wasn’t there the other six months in winter. It was not that you had to listen to the game, but that you could if you needed it." Thomas Boswell, Ken Burns Baseball
Oh I completely agree. I always say baseball is just the heartbeat of summer. But I’m just saying this WBC was awesome
My problem is with the second part, I seem to have a lot of trouble not letting a loss on some random Friday in mid-May to the Brewers get to me.
Yes because the Tampa bay rays are gonna finally win one
It’s scary seeing Trout not even make contact on any pitch
I read Bob Nightengale's article about this this morning, he said only 24 times in Trout's career has he struck out without making any contact with the ball. Insane stuff!
If he had another AB against ohtani, he probably would have gotten contact. Theyve said that Trout has never batted off ohtani, even in training. So, he's never seen it in the box.
I believe you, but how could that possibly be? *Never* batted against him once, **ever**, as teammates for years?
Dunno. I honestly have not seen or heard of Sho pitching live to his teammates.
Looked like he really wanted that second strike but just couldn't time it.
Not sure how you time or gauge anything against Ohani. That last pitch slider was a strike the whole way until the last 3 feet.
After spiking that fastball, to come back with that perfect slider on 3-2?! Amazing!
That slider was the best pitch all evening. Could not have been a better pitch.
Probably the best we’ll see all years considering the gravity of the situation
was a strike for 59 feet
Ice in his veins. Chills. He's a big game player.
I am convinced the baseball gods wrote this script
The anime on this is going to be glorious.
I dont follow baseball. My friend sent me this thread. May you explain why this match is so great?
Mike Trout is, by consensus, the greatest living hitter. Shohei Ohtani is a god-tier pitcher --- maybe not #1 but for sure top 5 among active players. i think greatest active is hard to argue against but by consensus the greatest living hitter? what about bonds? pujols?
I mean at this moment. Definitely not prime Bonds or Pujols, but Barry Bonds is almost 60 and Pujols is 43.
oh, i see. yea, agreed
Imagine if Lebron James and Michael Jordan were in their prime at the same time but were on the same team and so they never got to face each other. One year they compete in an international tournament on different teams and with 30 seconds on the clock they have to play 1 on 1 for the win.
Great analogy. That really captured it.
What do you follow passionately so that we can try to relate it to you?
It's the last batter of the last inning, of the final game of the tournament. The batter and pitcher normally play for the same team in MLB, and they are both excellent. It's tense, and it's good to see them scrap!
Excellent is even an understatement. These are two of the few greatest players of all time.
This was the two best players in the world facing off for the first time (with everything on the line in the championship game).
This was the two best players in the world facing off for the first time (with everything on the line in the championship game).
The comeback vs my Mexico and then this final at-bat...definitely.
As amazing as that Munetaka Murakami moment was, Mexico fought like hell the whole tournament and was awesome to watch. They were the second best team in the WBC this year, imo.
“Stars are aligned for this match up….” Darvish made the stars aligned. Hats off to him!

Good afternoon again sir. I was the one who asked what the atmosphere was like after the comeback victory over Mexico yesterday. How is it today?
I just finished watching the recording of the game and the post game ceremony in its entirety. It was so great that l cried. Since the game ended, all of the TV news programs are spending most of its air time to recap the whole game mixed with behind the scene footage. I didn’t see this much coverage on baseball at the Tokyo olympics even Japan won gold. I think this WBC is going to be talked about for years to come. They even congratulated my son and I and we’re not even Japanese. We’re Filipinos. 😂 As my son put it, he thought Team USA fans were a bit salty.
Wow! 4 straight 100+ mph fastballs to set up that nasty slider. Unbelievable ending.
Right?!? I feel like I witnessed history. This was a masterclass in pitching.
Ohtani pitching with dirt on his unis. A thing of beauty.
Wow thank you for bringing this detail to my attention
I’ll give it up to the Fox crew who kept the talking to a minimum. Easy to mess up the ending and talk all over the match up. They mostly stayed out of the way. Even though he went slider and not fastball to end it.
Maybe Joe Davis got the courage to smack John Smoltz quiet the moment the tournament ended.
Just plugged his headset into a dummy plug like you’d give an unplugged controller to a little kid, make them think your contributing.
Man, to get Joe Davis after Scully is such a gift
Those little historical tidbits about the U.S. -> Japan baseball connection during the last couple innings were absolutely fantastic. Same with hearing the relationship between Japan's manager and Ohtani. Just pure entertainment for a baseball fan.
"Mikey at bat" freaked me out a little. Shut up!!!
"He got me," Trout said of Ohtani's strikeout over him. "That f**king Ohtani boomed me." Trout added, "He's so good," repeated it four times
Trout then added Othani to the list of players he works out with this summer.
Trout then added Ohtani to the list of players he wants to miss the playoffs with this summer.
I like how you conveniently left out the other half of the pasta lmfao
Is the next part: Ohtani: "I can't win with these cats"
They need me, they fucking need me
I LOVE THE WBC!
As a total newbie, it was amazing to watch! Learned about "the game".
God exists and he’s a baseball fan
Fish man sad :(
not a mets one though
Davis almost laughing as he says "the count goes full" is just perfect. You can tell he couldn't believe it either.
This was a boss fight out of anime. 3-2 count too you kidding me
This video is 4+ minutes long and will probably take 10-15 minutes before it starts working.
Working now for me
Still. Great work. Thanks.
the video is 3 minutes and 20 seconds longer than I usually need
Honestly if you’re a player I don’t know how you wouldn’t wanna be a part of this after watching the WBC this year. I have a feeling the US will be even more stacked in 2026.
No doubt this moment was great but can’t help but think this will destroy their friendship forever Angels will have to trade 1 of these 2 to the Braves to avoid locker room drama
Maybe both of them. Just to be safe.
Should trade them both to a team in neutral territory. Like Canada or something idk
Sigh, I guess we'll take Ohtani...
We should probably take Trout too just to see if we can rehabilitate their friendship.
You shut your mouth!
Fine fine. We’ll take both to rid you of that locker room cancer.
I feel they're good natured enough to avoid it. An example is in the 2004 Olympics in basketball, a stacked Team USA with Tim Duncan lost to team Argentina in the semifinals with Manu Ginobili dominating the game. like a freaking movie
Seeing Trout disappointed and sad makes me disappointed and sad. Oh so close :(
It was seeing either him or Ohtani sad and disappointed. Lose-lose situation in termsof emotions, but win-win for baseball
Trout has had to deal with magnitudes more sadness in his career than Ohtani has, so I think most of us were pulling for him to finally have his moment.
Crying all the way to the bank!
My heart has never beat so fast. Hope Trout has a huge year
Congrats to team Japan, what an amazing tournament capped off by a great game and a literally historic matchup
That was heaven
everything about this was great. 9th inning 2 outs down by 1 with one of the greatest players up to hit while Ohtani smokes 2 fastballs and gets into a full count then striking him out with a slider. i love baseball so much
Shout out to the ump for not blowing it in the moment
It’s what makes it better that it was a swinging strike too, no room for an ump call to cheapen the strike out
That ump was probably sweating bullets trying to use his whole focus on a perfect strike zone.
I wasn't able to watch the game w/ the sound on but it gave me a completely objective view of the umps strike zone last night from the 4th inning on. There were, by count, maybe 2 misses that were on the edge of the box but they *did* cancel one another out as they benefitted each team. A check swing situation like the Giants in the 2021 postseason would have resulted in riots across the country
ಠ_ಠ
Really great match. The finale was like a movie.
Anime writers furiously at work after this
I foresee a sudden flood of baseball anime in 3-5 years
Leo Messi and Kylian Mbappe
I mean the angels have about as much success in European competition as PSG lol
Seriously, this matchup gave me World Cup Finals vibes. As great as Ohtani is, he needed this WBC win if he was going to cement himself as the GOAT. To take this Japanese team to the top the way Ichiro and Daisuke (who is not just a legend in Japan, but a GOD) have done in the past.

Holy shit what a final pitch
Everyone dreamed Trout VS Ohtani at 9th inning and this actually happened!! with 2-3 game 2outs.
Art.
Just saw someone drop to his knees at target
MORPHEUS IS FIGHTING NEO!
Lmfao underrated comment
After this insane tournament. Especially these last few games. We have to go back to meaningless baseball games until September. I'm not sure I can do that. I am not actually sure I can go back to watching the Angels in a week.

Seeing the comments on the House of highlights post on Instagram really highlights the bigotry of people... Crazy to see that people have no shame about what the post publically on social media
Daily, or at minimum monthly, life for most Japanese-Americans
This was quite literally perfect. This is going to be an at bat remembered in baseball history forever.
So torn as I’m a fan of Ohtani & Trout. Fairy tale ending for baseball fans around the world
Reminds me of the World Cup Final last year. Messi vs Mbappe. Two superstars who are also teammates going at it for the biggest prize. Congrats to Japan!
were those first 2 fastballs not THE one for Trout to crush one?
They were 100+ from a guy who started and ended the AB with sliders that broke about 18". Tough to time up a fastball that quick against a guy who has a slider like that in his back pocket.
Not to mention the best splitter in the MLB. Ohtani is KNOWN for some nasty splitties.
1-0 fastball was missed, 1-1 fastball was hopefully the adjustment needed to the velo. The 2-1 fuck you fastball was blown right by Trout though. If there was ever a chance to get a hit, that was the one.

It's all downhill from here
Trout looks like he was grown in a lab to be a baseball player. Guy looks like his house has a baseball diamond setup with no other floors and he moves from one base to the next during his nightly routine
Any angle that shows if that Trout sorta nod/acknowledgment at the start is to Ohtani?—and did Ohtani return/initiate that?
Best game in history
This is going straight into the spank bank.
Samurai Boss vs. Captain America
Pitch clock would’ve ruined this special moment
turn off pitch clock for the 9th! Who says no?
100% this. Pitch clock is OK for 1st to 8th but for 9th I think everyone will agree It's better to turn it Off for the best of baseball.
Absolutely. And remove it entirely for the playoffs
yea after watching this I dont know how you can have it in the playoffs. MLB *needs* these high drama/tension moments, and you simply can't have them when guys are under a clock
Yes please
Would it? Ohtani was working pretty fast - I feel like I'd need to see how many of those pitches he would've actually had to get off faster
AND TROUT STRIKES OUT AS THE CLOCK HITS 0!!!
100MPH right down the middle. Best V the Best loved it.
Incredible. Ohtani backed up his pregame speech. He’s great for the sport and for MLB.
I'm not even in the game and I swung at that slider. Holyyyyyy the way it just whips away. One of the filthiest sliders I've ever seen.
Fuck the pitch clock. This is the last time you'll watch a moment like this where baseball players are just playing baseball and taking their time in a big moment.
This is a movie storyline. Amazing
Ohtani gets bragging rights for the season, and Trout can't even say he didn't get any pitches to hit - he got 2 100-MPH fastballs right down broadway and struck out on a masterpiece of a slider.
The most important game these two will ever play since the angels suck
Poems, books and movies will be made about this one at-bat. One for the ages. Baseball is the true winner in this WBC!
Great pitching beats great hitting. Can we simulate Shohei vs Shohei?
I did, Shohei won
Don’t need to watch, it’s permanently ingrained into my brain.
As a Baseball this is my dream match up. 🇯🇵 Shohei Ohtani vs. 🇺🇲 Mike Trout
Yeahhhh. This tourney was ideal for growing the game of baseball. It had me standing up with anticipation
Joe Davis is the fucking man
March Madness ain't got nothing on the WBC!
Absolutely beautiful. How can you not be romantic about baseball?
God bless the baseball gods for giving us Ohtani vs Trout.
I was at a bar for a trivia night. The entire bar stopped the trivia mid-round to watch this whole at-bat. It was electric. Never seen anything like it.
trout has never had a high leverage AB in his entire career... he had no chance
