STOP putting bare hands in tanks

This is true to a degree, and handling your lotl also can damage their slime coat and spread diseases to you. However, washing your hands before and after and not grasping or grabbing your axolotl is an easy way to prevent this as well as just using gloves. It is perfectly acceptable to lightly interact (stressing LIGHTLY) with your axolotl as long as you use caution and common sense. They are look, don't touch animals.
I agree with your statement, however, don’t agree with washing hands before. IMHO, gloves only. Most people have bacteria and other germs (fungus) under their fingernails and are not scrubbing like surgeons prior to interacting with or doing tank maintenance. Please use gloves. Please. Also, soaps contain oils and detergents that can remain and enter tank water. Everyone makes their own personal choice about touching LOTL. I personally don’t. “Interacting” with lotls in my opinion is what leads to red leg and lots of pain for a little bit of fun. Not worth it to me.
Neat! How long have you raised Axolotls?
A year and a half.
8 years here. I just worry about treating pets like they are radioactive.
Understandable. Its not to protect ourselves from our LOTL. It’s to treat ourselves as contaminated, because we are. Not an opinion, a blatant, undeniable fact. I don’t think an amount of time raising axolotls is a valid comparison when we are talking about bacteria and germs. The doctor who figured out what bacteria were and why women were dying in hospitals after childbirth was a less experienced doctor than the others and was ridiculed for his conclusion. He ended up going insane and died because no one was taking him seriously. I don’t plan on having that be my outcome, BTW. And the reason I use those long of gloves is because my LOTL is in a 105 gallon tank. If I wear shorter gloves, the water goes inside my gloves.
Thank you for this post, I did not know longer gloves existed. I do not touch my little guy but I clean up the bottom of the tank everyday and normal rubber glove were that little bit too short and the water would leek in so I didn't use them and just wash my hands before and after. Even though I've only had him for a week but I've noticed my skin becoming quite irritated from all the chemicals. I just ordered these ones, they're not specifically for aquariums but I don't handle him so I'm sure it's fine. Also they're in much nicer colours since I'm going to be wearing them multiple times a day hehehe https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XRFS6F9/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o00\_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Or just wash your filthy mitts and don't manhandle your axolotl!
ATTN all LOTL lovers: Please for the love of all that is good in the world… stop handling lotls with no gloves or putting your bare hands in tank. Stop posting pics and videos of booping them, getting them to bite your finger, etc. RED LEG is caused by germs that reside on human skin. Please all lotl owners please please stop. PLEASE STOP 🛑
