The amount of effort some people will invest into converting their corner of a digital playground into their own personal fief is unbelievable.

_learned_foot_

It’s not just their digital playground, many will do it with their real life playground. Petty power comes with a belief in huge powers, and a nasty turn when they get told no.

ltmkji

i think for a lot of these people, it's the only power they've really ever had.

HotTakes4HotCakes

*For that vast majority of them.

mrpopenfresh

I'm consistently grateful that people who share completely terrible opinions and who control subreddits will never be in positions of power, because the world would be a worse place if they did.

Bonezone420

There's a very good reason why the kinds of people who want power should never have it wink wink, nudge nudge, real world political jokes go here. But in the online space this shit runs rampant because of how easy it is to just hit a button and give someone a lot of control over something like, well, a subreddit or a discord server and when those things get popular the sheer amount of power and influence people have really just outs who they are behind the mask. I can't count the number of times genuinely innocuous hobby centric discord communities, just as an example, have become really weird hives of drama where the admin or moderator wound up outing themselves as a complete lunatic or sex pest because god forbid a server get moderately popular without one guy going fucking wild and deciding he has to horn on every underaged girl he can while threatening to ban them and remove their ability to talk about pokemon or whatever if they don't comply. Or they decide the niche hobby server that was set up to be a niche hobby server isn't popular enough so it has to become a ~social hub~ And within a month it's basically just a nightmare hellscape filled with wannabe streamers and, inexplicably erpers - for it is always erpers on discord - who don't even know what the original subject is. There's an old saying that absolute power corrupts absolutely; and I don't think it's true. I think most people are just fucking assholes, and just don't have the avenues to express how big an asshole they are until they're the biggest bully on the playground.

who_is_this3737

They are riding a power high. I got banned last month for calling out a Liverpool fan who was falsely claiming a statistics for a City match without any proof. I called him an 'idiot' for claiming things without having numerical proof. The mod banned me and when I appealed he threatened me with a perma ban for appealing... Most of the mods are Liverpool/United fans and they ban anyone speaking against these clubs. Just last week, I was banned for jokingly calling Ronaldo as Mr.Europa League after Leicester match. I'm like - really? 👀 Mods at r/soccer are very biased.

Nimonic

>Most of the mods are Liverpool/United fans and they ban anyone speaking against these clubs Hahaha, what? Imagine saying that people are getting banned for "speaking against" United on r/soccer of all places.

count_frightenstein

I'm a City fan and left that hellhole about 2 years ago after they warned me about some argument that I didn't start. Not interested in that. No actual discussion there with supporters of other clubs, just tribal swarming of comments.

[deleted]

you have to realize that most mods of large subs aren't normal people. To do their job, they basically need to have large amounts of free time and normal people aren't willing to work full time jobs, then spend half their free time to mod. So these people tend to be grossly underemployed and generally loser caricatures. This is the only power they will ever have in life so they focus their spite into it.

LastNightsTacoBell

The fact that ppl take this site that damn serious is unbelievable. Just look at when a dude fakes a post about cancer to get karma. Ppl act like that person killed someone

A47Cabin

Great write up but you totally missed a chance for a Yellow Card/Red Card play on words in the title smh

scattergather

And to work in that old standby chant, "The referee's a wanker".

A47Cabin

Is that the European equivalent of when us Americans yell “Fuck you ref” or tell umpires to get their eyes checked

Supreme_waste_o_time

No its not a European thing, I’ve only seen it from US chants. In the UK we’d chant “you dont know what you’re doing” or “same old ‘*insert club name*’, always cheating”

DannyBrownsDoritos

There's also "you're not fit to referee" which always sounds too much like the results of a disciplinary to be an effective chant.

Dwarfherd

"Get off your knees, ref! You're blowing the game!" - some wannabe wit in the crowd

ChiAllTheTime

Wasn't yiyiyiyi the anti vax mood that was kicked out because of his sentiments? Surely he wouldn't hold any grudges...

KensaiVG

Bingo

FIJIBOYFIJI

Yeah, I mean i think yiyiyiyi was a better mod than alot of the current ones but they did deserve to be booted off the modteam due to being an anti-vaxxer

TTA0709

He actually didn't. As messed up his opinions were, he never banned anyone because they disagreed with him or called him out. Can't say the same about the anti-semitic mod or the one banning people for not rating certain players while constantly breaking the DD rules himself.

ChiAllTheTime

Tbh i haven't seen proof of mods banning people for not rating players or being anti-semitic...all I've seen is people claiming it but when you ask for proof the crop an image or straight up don't reply. I have seen proof of yiyiyiyi being antivax though.

rho_93

Thought yous was a goner mate, good to see you

TTA0709

Thanks

PumpedUpMatic

Oh hey mate, nice to see you around here, how are you doing?

TTA0709

Hey man, I'm doing really well. What about you? Hows everything been?

PumpedUpMatic

Could be better, won't lie, but I'm just trying to take positives out of each day!

TTA0709

Hey keep on keeping on my friend!

Itchy-Face791

Have you been sent to the Shadow Realm as well?

PumpedUpMatic

7 days uno For making 2 game comments about the United v Leicester game Lo and behold, I go there on Monday during the Arsenal game and the DD is used as match thread

delidl

The r/soccer mods are so fucking shit

PumpedUpMatic

You got banned didn’t you?

delidl

Nah, for some reason they don’t ban me. Which is weird because I definitely break the rules

PumpedUpMatic

That’s because you aren’t reported I think. There are also cases where I talk about the ongoing Portuguese league matches in the DD and I’m not banned I’m pretty sure I was reported for some salty Chelsea fan when I said “TAA > Reece” and ended up banned for making 2 comments about a game Whatever, my ban ends in two hours

1PSW1CH

I’m pretty sure that was a different guy, unless he’s using an alt or something

DannyBrownsDoritos

Being banned from saying twat on somewhere to discuss football feels like cultural imperialism

zenchowdah

I am going to wildly speculate that they're trying to get ahead of anti-qatar sentiment

Zenzayy

Get ahead of it? r/soccer is already full on anti-qatar, (as you would expect) If they are trying to get ahead of it, then they are a few years late lmao

Golden_Lilac

Hmm I was thinking they were hoping they could get their favorite clubs to notice them or something dumb like that. Like “maybe if I moderate this sub good enough they’ll finally send us a message!!” That or the admins messaged them some bullshit about needing to clean up their community for advertisers (as harmless as the banter was, the sub could get vitriolic at times)

Priyon

All this work for zero pay. Not even tendies or snuggle time rewards from their favourite body pillows. The basement dwellers are putting all that effort for free.

zenchowdah

They're getting dopamine, probably. Money doesn't drive *everything*.

Cahootie

I don't have any insight into the r/soccer moderation team for obvious reasons, but I can tell you why I do it on a fairly comparable subreddit in terms of size. At first I just joined since I thought it'd be interesting. I'd been a member of the community for a while and enjoyed my time there, and considering my previous endeavours in community work and event organizing I felt that I could give something back to a group I was a part of. Another aspect that's pretty significant is that it just feels good to build something, regardless of whether it's moderating a subreddit or painting something (won't go as far as to compare it to raising a baby, even if a lot of people do act like kids). Watching the progression and development of the community is satisfying, and the people who go "THEY DO IT FOR FREE" seem to entirely miss the point of a hobby. Probably the main reason why I've kept going for years though is that I just enjoy my time with the other mods. Our internal communication is active pretty much around the clock, we play video games together, some have met up in real life, and I enjoy the back and forth when we try to tweak the rules to perfection or plan big events. It just becomes a group of online friends from all around the world who have gathered around a shared interest in something, no different than joining a raid group in WoW or doing GISH hunts with the same group of people each year.

EzYouReal

/r/LeagueOfLegends moderator to save everyone else a click

Priyon

Its sad to be honest, seeing them go on that little power trip. Probably the most attention they've got in life right now.

venomoussquid

I think every sub should be run like this. Authoritarian and corrupt. No one should be able to have fun.

Dwarfherd

I mean, it's on point for the sport of soccer given the international organizational body.

onometre

Agreed, every sub should be SRD

venomoussquid

and anyone that's commented more than like 20 times on SRD should be permabanned via gunshot

pawksvolts

These mods are the worst. During a world cup, some team started a kick off before the other team was ready and a post mocking the team was allowed with heaps of upvotes. A few days later, England did the same thing and they banned any posts mocking them - bunch of hypocrites that can't take a joke

FurioSoprano7

I once questionned the Fifa ranking of that certain cheating team, saying it was too high. Got banned for a week, saying i should 'argue better'

Ball_Knowledge

😭😭😭 crying

Chinapig

/r/football is appalling. Full of the worst uneducated opinions on football and just genuine idiots who actively engage in Messi v ronaldo arguments. Dry as fuck. No banter.

who_is_this3737

I called Ronaldo as Mr.Europa League after match against Leicester and I got banned for 7 days.. Like wut??? 👀

weirdwallace75

> Waiting for the migration to r/football. Really want to talk about rugby, eh?

justdestiny123

Man I spend most of my time on r/soccer or r/scottishfooball when I use Reddit and somehow didn't hear about this

Cardealer1000

As far as I'm aware the former mod left because of anti vax drama.

MexicansInParis

I’m not even assed with that change, the daily thread became a shitshow a few years ago. It used to be about engaging discussion but it devolved into Twitter memes and shitposting.

Zenzayy

agreed, it just became another post-match thread for everyone to post their dogshit comments that didnt make it to the top in yesterdays actual matchthread

TTA0709

You forgot a few details. One of the mods on that sub, who loves banning people and holding grudges, has mocked autistic people and even used the word autistic as an insult when discussing football. In addition to using the r-word. And there was that one time when one of the mods did started banning people who linked to the comment where he was being anti-semitic or supporting someone being anti-semitic.

r0gue007

This was a great write-up. The exact meta-commentary I subbed for.

SunsetBain

It's increasingly obvious that some of these people have sexual fetishes for controlling other people, and they're getting their rocks off from acting like this. These people have no respect for bystander consent, and it needs to be called out.

weirdwallace75

Nothing more toxic than g\*mers.

Lot of people complained about the DD being full of match comments tbh

KarlKraftwagen

rightfully so honestly, i get maybe some comments are okay but to just comment „what a ball trent“ on a DD shouldn‘t be allowed

TIGHazard

I never had any issue finding Match Threads. But then again I used [the search function that they always had linked at the top of the discussion.](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/search?sort=new&restrict_sr=on&q=flair%3A%2BMatch%2BThread%2B)

LurkMonster

Soccer mods refused to add rule that top level comments in Post Match Threads be at least one sentence, I guess that would be misuse of power. Instead they mass ban users in DS while PMTs are 50% memes.

1PSW1CH

Good to see a friendly face! Yeah it’s really gone to shit, I honestly don’t know what’s happened. Mods that used to be reasonable people have turned into knobheads and you can get banned at any time for literally fuck all. I’m a regular user who switched accounts a few months ago, I literally got banned for nothing a couple times until I told them I’m a regular - it’s impossible for new users to comment on there. A couple weeks ago I got banned for saying Rio Ferdinand isn’t a good husband, something I’ve seen people comment a million times on that sub. The comment of the year was a joke about Alonso killing a woman ffs. Honestly I’m just gonna steer clear of that shithole, hopefully we migrate to another sub.

PumpedUpMatic

Wait you were banned too? I was banned for 7 days on Saturday for making a grand total of 2 comments in the DD about the Man United v Leicester game

FloppedYaYa

I was banned for commenting "Chelsea what be you doing" when they were 4-1 down to Brentford They then used comments I'd made about Iran's treatment of women in the Qatar debates to extend my ban I've had little problems with the sub before that but that was absurd. When I'm allowed to post again I'm gonna feel like walking on eggshells

1PSW1CH

Nah the mods said they’d overturn it if I promised to watch myself in future, but I just can’t really be fucked anymore. Hahahahaha fucking hell that’s obscene, have to ban the whole sub in that case

PumpedUpMatic

First offense since the new rules were implemented as well, didn't even bother to argue as I just can't tbh I'll go there here and now on this account anyways

Is soccerDD dead for good? Such a shame. I understand them not wanting any fun on their sub, but why can't we have any on our?

FloppedYaYa

At least you weren't banned first for joking about Chelsea losing to Brentford and then for saying Iran's treatment of women isn't good

weirdwallace75

It's all a bunch of g\*mers anyway. No loss.

4Blu

I wondered why r/soccer posts stopped showing up on the front page. I guess that answers it.

BenjaminDaaly21

From what I remember r/soccer removed themselves from being on the front page because when the clip of a goal made it up there a bunch of non-soccer fans would comment on the post, which the r/soccer users supposedly didn't like.

nonhofantasia

Because during important matches (eg world cup or euros) it was full of users, especially Americans, who didn't know nothing about football and made shit comments

Dwarfherd

So, the same thing the college football, college basketball, and nfl subreddits have to deal with: a bunch of Americans who know nothing about the sport making shit comnents

BenjaminDaaly21

No, that doesn't make any sense anyway. How many American uses who don't already subscribe to r/soccer would participate in match threads?

nonhofantasia

You hardly care about going to a sub if it doesn't appear in r/all

jbert146

/r/anime and some related subs had to do the same thing. For some reason there’s a contingent of users who get really furious when they see an anime-related post on /r/all

Glasdir

r/soccer sucks anyway. You only get to have an opinion if it aligns with that of one of the super league scum clubs. Club subs are superior in every way, my absolute favourite sub on Reddit is Brighton’s, genuinely nice community and some really great people there. UTA! Edit: appear to have ruffled some (eagles?) feathers with this one?

Zenzayy

> You only get to have an opinion if it aligns with that of one of the super league scum clubs uuummm im sorry but i have never seen the amount of outrage on r/soccer than against the super league and the clubs involved... what in the world are you smoking?

Glasdir

You’ve really never seen a reasonable comment downvote bombed by the hordes of fans of one of the big clubs because they have a difference of opinion? What have *you* been smoking?

Zenzayy

Can you actually respond to my comment?

Glasdir

I did. You clearly don’t understand my original point.

Zenzayy

O k sure guy Might wanna learn to read lmao

Glasdir

Good idea. You should.

thesemasksaretight

Where do mods like this even come from? Were they like this when they started modding? Or did modding corrupt them? I always find insane mods so astonishing and yet fascinating

FIJIBOYFIJI

Mods gave people weeklong bans (without warning) to people playing Kahoots about football and when finally challenged about it they said that bots did it.

SeverusSnapechat

[https://www.unddit.com/r/soccer/comments/tx4006/\_/i3m6ufp/](https://www.unddit.com/r/soccer/comments/tx4006/_/i3m6ufp/) got this before it got removed lmao

[deleted]

Wait. They deleted it? Why? I didn't break any of reddits rules and the comment even got heavily upvoted, which indicates that this is something people want to discuss. I really want to make another comment asking why it was deleted, but they'll probably permaban me, and I don't want that. In any case, I didn't doubt the mods before but I do now. Where there is smoke, there is fire. If they knew that all the allegations in this thread were bullshit, they'd just say it. Instead of deleting the comment and pretending it never happened. 1984 type shit.

Of course they banned you guys too. I got a 7 day for making a joke about Ronaldo being scared of City and Leicester, 7 days ffs. I don’t know why they started this shit, the DD was fine how it was. The only people that asked for this were people who weren’t regulars. I’ve seen people wonder why the DD is moving slow and their comment gets deleted within 5 minutes lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Exactly mate. Any time I ever commented something serious I got serious replies and most of the regulars were helpful but also knew how to take the piss and that’s what made the DD fun. Then some randoms who rarely ever comment there cry about it and give the mods an excuse to go on a power trip, this is the end result.

PumpedUpMatic

I was banned for making 2 comments about the Man Utd v Leicester game And it wasn't a 1 day ban or 3 day given it was my first offense 7 days lmao

RiC_David

Meta is essentially self referential, so in the context of a subreddit it's posts not about the sub's subject matter but the sub itself.

SeverusSnapechat

a comment below yours got removed within 15 seconds.

On one hand I get that they dont want to get harrased or bothered by already banned users But also the way to solve this is by more transparency and good faith, not by witchunting outside the bounds of your sub Soccercourt could have never become a thing in this environment (and its not a thing because of this environment) and that sub had great moments

FIJIBOYFIJI

I just assumed it was the same guy as KeegansPerm/ShaqirisThighs

TTA0709

Me too

TTA0709

>They’re bullies. Nothing more, nothing less Not all of them. Some of them weren't bad, but theres no getting away from the fact that some of them have this weird authority complex where they'll ban you for saying opinions about football that they disagree with

lokaler_datentraeger

Christ Alive I knew the mods were bad but not *that* bad. Totalitarian weirdos

Chinapig

I recently got a week ban on a thread about hope solo being arrested for saying her leaked pics looked like a Toby carvery. Ridiculous ban. I can’t imagine what kind of person actually wants to be a Reddit mod. It’s embarrassing.

LordMangudai

I mean that is a bit of a nasty body-shaming comment to make tbh

Chinapig

Jesus Christ. It’s a football sub. You sound just as pathetic. Zero banter. More than likely American.

Dawnsday

Glad to see this has actually turned into a spectacle. Mods slaughtered one of the most chill communities just to feel powerful, I used to refresh DD religiously at work and home and now I barely open it. A week ban for light criticism of the new rules. Really need this to change

FloppedYaYa

Last week I got a 3 day ban for "using Daily Discussion as a match thread" (literally all I did was make fun of Chelsea for losing to Brentford, and I've checked and people still use the DD as a match thread without getting bans) It quickly became a 14 day ban for calling Iran's treatment of LGBT people and women "savage" behaviour. Apparently this was "promoting hate" There's obviously a few mods there on a power trip

JohnnyCupcakes

r/soccer is dogshit. worse mods on reddit by FAR
