Some very under-baked moments, but some really good tracks. It’s a shame he makes such short, spur of the moment projects these days rather than something fully formed and coherent.
>Some very under-baked moments
This is just Kanye since TLOP. Very disappointing.
I remember not too long ago, he said people tell him that "He hasn't done a finished album since Yeezus" and that's something he wanted to work on. I don't know if it's his mental health, honestly don't know how I feel about him being off the meds, he's all over the place in recent years.
Yeah, even though I don’t necessarily vibe with the lyrics his vocal melodies and the emotion behind them is really beautiful.
The production is so god damn good, second listen through and it’s easier to vibe with the vocals already.
i know a lot of people won't and don't like this yet or ever will, but this is definitely going to be a really interesting point in Kanye's legacy when we look back and I personally think it's really interesting.
It reminds me of how Bob Dylan basically did the same thing at the end of the 70’s and into the 80’s. People were so confused and a lot of his fans put off but it really just provided another layer in his really epic legacy that people are still trying to figure out to this day. I suspect it’ll be the same for Kanye
This is exactly how I see it ! whether or not it'll be as great as how Dylan did it we'll see later, but for now yeah there's a huge difference between pre-ye and post-ye albums.
My thoughts exactly. This sums up the last decade of Kanye perfectly. My bet with this is that we’ll see a manic spike from him, and the next album will be so crazy radical that this album seems like a kids bop tape. He can’t keep this up.
Normally I would agree with you, but the mental deterioration Kanye has showed in the last 5 years is crazy to me. The man really went from “I Love It” and “XTCY” to this in a matter of a few years. I think he’s exhausted this “I’m a pure man” vibe and the negative reviews of this project will result in an even crazier kanye.
> The man really went from “I Love It” and “XTCY” to this in a matter of a few years.
You mean literally ONE year lol
edit: responded to the wrong comment it seems whoops
XTCY and I Love It were literally just over a year ago. August and September, 2018, respectively. Ye had his revelation about Christ in April... No one should expect this to be a long term phase yet.
I’ve been a fan of his for years that what’s everyone saiid about graduation, 808s , and yeezus. Kanye just doesn’t whatever he wants so you never know what you’re gonna get down the line.
i mean, it's true there is a big difference pre-808s and post-808s kanye too. it's not a bad thing, it just shows an artist going through different phases i guess.
I really liked it and I didn't think I would. I think it's better than YE, seems way more listenable. The religious part I can't relate to really, but then again I couldn't relate to dating supermodels or being oppressed because I'm black either. It's still really well made and very original.
I figure most people will talk shit because it's Kanye and hating him is a meme at this point. I don't give a shit and I don't think he gives a fuck either.
I’d bet money on him wearing the blue flannel no matter what. I’m excited for it regardless. I have a lot of thoughts already. And always love to hear what the melon has to articulate whether I agree or not
I've come to notice I just have completely different tastes in music than that dude. Respect to him cause he works really hard and his reviews are really well-made, but it's just subjective and I think we like completely different stuff lol
I don't understand how some songs sound worse? Everything We Need is just The Storm but with an emptier beat. Not to mention that the mixing is pretty bad on a lot of tracks. Some of the vocals sound like they were recorded through a cell phone.
I don't mind shorter albums, but 11 tracks 27 minutes? Ye and KSG at least let you get into the song since but so many of these songs are only 2 minutes and feel like the START of a great idea but not a finished product.
Yeah who tf engineered this? Regardless of how you feel about the music I wish it sounded like it came from one of the greatest recording artists of all time
not upset by the inspiration for the lyrics, just the execution was weak af. The problem is people were expecting a Jesus Walks level shit and there's nothing anywhere near that good on here.
Ya what don’t people get about this. We know from the leaks that they came up with these lyrics the same way cartman did for faith + 1 in south park. He took good songs and then did Christian madlibs with them.
Feelin a little sad. On the one hand, I’m all for whatever makes people happy. And Kanye clearly seems happier than he ever has. And that’s more important than sick beats. But at the same, hard not to feel the best days of Ye are firmly behind us at this point.
I can’t deal with multiple albums that are just this same theme over and over. And that’s what gospel music is. Beautiful instrumentality and harmony, but utterly dull and repetitive lyrical content. This is just not something I’ll want to listen to a lot.
Water was almost a transcendent beauty...until he just says Jesus do “x” for a full minute straight. There are other examples throughout the album. Maybe not the best production values, but still extremely enjoyable beats, synths and choirs. But there’s just nothing interesting going on lyrically.
I don’t feel good that the selfish part of me wishes he never started this born again thing, because he seems happy. And that’s awful.
Overall I’m just kinda bummed.

Honestly, after hearing the album, it’s fine, I like some of the tracks but I feel like I need to cleanse my pallet with some classic Ye quotes:
If i fucked this model
and she just bleached her asshole
and I get bleach on my t shirt
imma feel like an asshole.

Feel like people are gonna disagree hard with me but I love God Is. That song is so goddamn raw and Kanye’s voice cracking just added to that for me. I fell in love with it immediately. I enjoy a lot of the other songs but God Is hit me different and hell I’m an atheist
Nah that's revisionist history. The reaction to 808s was a big reason why he was so lyrical (remember he came off of two weak projects lyrically) and brought in so many classic rap artists on there.
Not for everyone I understand their problems with it. HOWEVER this hit all the right notes with me. This is what I wanted and Kanye delivered. See y’all in Sunday School 🙏🙏🙏
On my first listen it was a quick 6/10 as I felt half the tracks were unfinished. On my second and third replays, and listening to Water, Closed on Sunday, and Everything we Need multiple times (I thought these were the weakest tracks), they quickly grew on me.
I personally think the mixing's fine. I feel like the graininess is intended - that could just be me, though. Understandable people might want a cleaner experience.
I think Follow God is one of Kanye's best tracks to date. I don't think there were meant to be bangers or slaps on this track, but Follow God hits that spot for me.
I rate it 8/10 now. I wish some of the tracks were longer, like Selah. Also I can't help but kinda laugh at some cheese lyrics here and there. All in all I really like this. REALLY like it.
Anyone else find the lyric about him charging prices for shoes and stuff so his family doesn’t starve super fucked up? Dude there are people starving right now in this country. You’ll be ok even if you weren’t selling Dad hats for $45.
I’m a huge Kanye fan but that line was bizarre and really makes me question how genuine the theme of the album is.
I like it a lot. The beats are dope. The songs have a great sound. Production is on point imo.
I'm not the religious type. Ive never been a big lyrics guy; I never considered Kanye to be a great lyricist anyway.
However, Kanye is an amazing artist. He's always doing something new, and this album didn't disappoint. I could see this being his most impactful album, but not the most loved by his fans.
Mix is trash, but the album is really good. Honestly the cringe lyrics made me laugh my ass off and i don’t mind em. Production is what makes Kanye Kanye and he nailed it
Lotta Jesus. Great beats
It is called Jesus is king
Yeah true

Someone check on the CEO of Atheism

It’s just a Rhodes type piano plucking one note constantly. Sounds like that though

Some very under-baked moments, but some really good tracks. It’s a shame he makes such short, spur of the moment projects these days rather than something fully formed and coherent.
Yeah that's my biggest gripe. I was introduced to him with TLOP and it's crazy transitions.
Are you saying TLOP was well thought-out?
TLOP was an actual 1 hour album at least lol
It took a lot of different releases to get to that point
SWISH
IMA FIX WOLVES
IMA FIX JIK
Yeah, TLOP is great. It's long as hell, and coherent in the fact that there's a method to the madness. Ye kind of feels slapped together.
>Some very under-baked moments This is just Kanye since TLOP. Very disappointing. I remember not too long ago, he said people tell him that "He hasn't done a finished album since Yeezus" and that's something he wanted to work on. I don't know if it's his mental health, honestly don't know how I feel about him being off the meds, he's all over the place in recent years.
Seriously, ksg was was a god tier project. I'll be satisfied with anything he releases for the next couple years cuz of the masterpiece that is ksg.
This man, KSG did a better job of making me feel in touch with my own Spirituality instead of an album with JESUS literally in the title
KSG touched more on mental health at least for me anyway which feels more real since a lot of people are experiencing that.
The album would be a 10, but on Water you can really tell that one of the audio engineers was having premarital sex :/ too bad
It’s good but damn. Touch the Sky came on after the album finished and I almost shed a tear on what it used to be.
Devil in a new dress for me 😢
Top 5 Kanye songs for me. Best Rick Ross verse of all time.

you are blessed
I got All Mine, which is a great transition from Jesus Is Lord
I got Runaway, and first was like "damn, a remix" cause the last track was so short
Last track was sounding fire and then it cut off so fast
I got "I love it " , Spotify really knows how to keep the mood going
I Wonder for me, and I feel like it blows every song on JIK out of the water
I wonder is a classic.
You Know What? Maybe You’re Right. ... ... ... Aight?
Haha yeah fuck man. Every song people have listed that came on after I would take in a heartbeat.
I got Father Stretch My Hands lol, I was listening to it thinking it was part of the album but then realized that it wasn’t even a part of the album.
All Falls down played for me and I was like damn, this is what good mixing sounds like lmao.
I got heartless and was caught off guard

So funny to see people jump to conclusions upon a couple hours of listening.
Yeah, even though I don’t necessarily vibe with the lyrics his vocal melodies and the emotion behind them is really beautiful. The production is so god damn good, second listen through and it’s easier to vibe with the vocals already.
i hate it, its awesome*
bro, use this gospel is fucking amazing
It would've been better if Kenny G's part was mixed with the rest of the song. The bare naked solo didn't hit as hard.
Wish the beat right after the solo wasn’t just at the end of the song for whatever reason and played during the vocals
We need the Pusha T “Yuuughh” back before his verse on Use This Gospel
i know a lot of people won't and don't like this yet or ever will, but this is definitely going to be a really interesting point in Kanye's legacy when we look back and I personally think it's really interesting.
